Things I have learned from, or had "confirmed" by "A Haunting". I'm operating from within the show's paradigm, of course, not from a sceptical viewpoint.

1. A spirit can be human or diabolical. Human spirits vary in nature and intent, diabolical spirits are Bad Ass, and their intent is to possess and destroy the unfortunate humans it is interacting with. General MO: manifest scarily, resulting fear feeding it and bringing the people more under its influence.

2. A malevolent spirit can't interfere with a person without their consent, however consent may be unknowingly given (eg by using a ouiji board), or (my own thoughts) implied in corrupt beliefs that a person subscribes to, be they religious, spiritual, new age or occult.

Edit: add 2a. A Ouiji board is bad, bad news. The intent to communicate with whatever happens to be on the other side basically means you give consent to be dominated by whatever picks up the line at the other end. Oh - and you're not supposed to burn the board if you do get into trouble with it! (for some reason)

3. Clairvoyants can communicate with the spirits, and can find out what they want, tell them to go to the light or whatever. They can identify diabolicals but have no power over them and get very scared. Church officials who carry out exorcisms have power over diabolicals in proportion to their own holiness and integrity. (That last bit's my opinion - I'm slightly skeptical of the spiritual integrity of the Catholic Church as an organisation)

4. If confronted by an "evil spirit", or belief thereof, the best thing to do is to not interact with or acknowledge it. Feeling fear or anger will make things worse, so avoid that if you can. Consciously revoke any unconscious consent you may have given for it to have power over you, and consciously acknowledge that the only thing that has power over you is God/Allah/etc, or, if those are unpalatable to you, an infinite, loving, creative intelligence whose relationship to evil is one of truth to falsity (ie not EQUAL opposites).
In fact, its a good idea to do that last bit that during and after watching the show, since it presents a lot of ideas (coupled with not-quite-subliminally flashed images) which, if accepted unquestioningly, may constitute consent to be interfered with by spirits. For example, I found this on a board discussing the show:
Quote:
My 2 boys and I were watching "A Haunting" last night. Demons Dwell....During the part where Arne sees the demon at the well, a glass bowl and some silverware that were on a kitchen counter flew across the kitchen. ... We said a prayer to cleanse the house but I feel as if I let something in I shouldn't have....and I am terrified
"A Haunting" discussion board

I watch it from a "know your enemy" standpoint, and if it's just before going to sleep, spend a bit of time engaging my mind in more positive mental activity.

This stuff interests me, so I'm just posting it in case anyone else is interested.

Cheers
