Sure, I haven't got any particular objection to the partition idea, I don't really know much about it.
All I'm saying is that the troops need to stay in place so that this partition, or whatever system they put in place, is working and is accepted by enough Iraquis that there's no civil war. If they draw up some plan that has enough people upset that it garuntees an ongoing conflict, and then say, "O.K fellas, See ya!" that's not good enough. |
I agree that you gotta finish what you started, but our troops need more support to do the job right. They need to double or triple the number of troop there to keep the security pretty tight until things get sorted out including the regional issues. If not, best thing to do is to get the hell out. It just doesn't make sense to let the situation worsen while our troops are still there stuck in the middle of civil war. People in DC need to make harsh but quick decision. |

...and just plain wrong. (He placed me on that list, too.)
Whatever "common sense" Octavius may have is wholly obscured and even warped by his heavy biases and other pettiness, whether he recognizes it or not... |

| Thats the problem, Bush and the neo-cons are saying the only thing acceptable is a Western, secular democracy. That will never happen so under your "leave the troops until the job is done" will mean that troops stay there forever. |
Well, since people are already looking behind them for the exit maybe there will be another 'change of heart' with a sense of compromise (or complete reversal) by Bush and neo con company. They've changed their tunes on ocassion, why take them at their word now? |

Probable Democratic victory in two weeks...
Probable (yes, I think so) Democratic presidential victory in 2008...
...hard to say what the future has in store for U.S. Iraq and even U.S. Middle East policy. |

| Again I repeat my statement that us Lefties predicited everything that happened in Iraq a year before the war even started. This war was folly from the beginning and all the hippy pot-smoking lefty moonbats knew that. All the right wing, 9/11 changed everything wingnuts were totally wrong on every level possible. |
Seems to me the Lefties also predicted that America would stay in Iraq forever or at least until all the oil was gone. Seems to me that they also predicted that Iran would be next. This despite me and other right wing "wingnuts" saying "not likely". It also seems to me that NO ONE said anything about Iraq being a quagmire until WELL after it became one.
Better check that crystal ball of yours. |

How could you forget about me? I'm deeply hurt.
But on a more serious note, I supported the war in various of its goals.
For example as a way of removing Saddam and making sure he would never be able to develop WMD the war was unparalled.
As a way to give Iraqis security and freedom it leaves something to be desired.
However it does seem that things are getting better ( I see the escalating violence as a reaction to it) Don't the Iraqis control three of their own provinces now as opposed to none just after the war? |

| Urban Myth, we said they went into Iraq for the oil . And the adminstration rountinely said the oil was going to pay for the war and the rebuilding. The specific word quagmire was never used but me and hundreds of thousands of other protesters (who can read history books) said that NO Muslim/Arab nation would allow an American occupation. To see this just look 200km to the west in Palestine. Sorry, we were right on every single count and what I really love is that no matter how bad and wrongly it continues to go you still can't admit you were wrong about this unjust and immoral war. |

You are right on that account TUM, gotta give you that. Not sure if I agree with the quagmire bit though. The reason some of those involved in Gulf War I who opposed this invasion from the beginning was a potential quagmire. |

Some of the more "realist" oriented critics predicted the quagmire, I think, and probably some of the leftists. The more sentimentalist, anti-American critics probably didn't make that prediction because it would have implied that the USA is something other than an omnipotent monster capabale of forcing its will upon helpless little people around the world.
This reminds me of an amusing anecdote I heard about a rally against the Vietnam War held in London. These fresh-faced, do-gooder American girls were standing in the crowd and going on about how awful it was that a peaceful and defenseless people like the Vietnamese were being bullied into submission by a superpower. A British guy standing in front of them turned around and said: "You don't get it, do you? The Vietnamese are going to WIN."

You were not right about either Iraq or Iran. Sorry I was not wrong about this war, I supported it as a way to get rid of Saddam and sons and that it did very well.
Try and comprehend that simply because someone agrees with the war because it accomplishes some things they've hoped for does not mean that they agree with ALL of the war's aims, goals or accomplishments. For example I'm deeply disappointed in AG...that was poorly set up and run. Also the pay system in the Iraq army...there was some news about a officer having to fly in a helicopter with three sacks of cash to pay some Iraqi troops who hadn't been paid for a long time which was causing discontent. Certainly a better system could be set up than THIS? |
