Working out your own agreement with your school if you really like each other may be one. If they really do like and appreciate you, there are all sorts of little perks they can provide, just like there are all sorts of things you can do for them.
However, given my love of very little Korean kids I couldn't possibly see one reason to sign with them in the first place, personally.  |

I love the kids and my school is good.Better than the other schools around i see. Problem is that they're a brand new school and follow the dictates from Gyeonggi-do education board "think tank" to the letter.
So if I re-sign, I get 4 weeks holiday instead of 2, (to be taken when they decide, woohoo!). But I still have to do summer and winter camp while the KT's get their 5 weeks off each time...
Negociation may work, but so far the inflexible decrees from Rome ie Gyeonggi-do are set in stone.
Re-signing is still a few months away, but I can't see it happening at all. Has anyone re-signed with them lately? What did you manage to squeeze out of them? And..are EPIK any better, anybody? |

Well, I have just re-signed with my school for another year.
Here's why...
Great team of Korean coworkers and supervisor. They all speak excellent English and are interested in helping the kids learn English and not just what is in the text book.
Good Housing: Own apartment which is walking distance from the school.
I am paid on time.
Good location: I am 30 mins from the Seoul subway by bus and surrounded by mountains, fields etc.
Lovely kids: They aren't all interested in learning English, but they always try, with a bit of encouragement.

That sounds good bdt, my conditions are similar- new officetel, good c-teacher etc..but its the lack of time off. |

Yeah, I see it happening all the time - waygook finds a good school, they think they've got a good waygook, they accomodate each other and then some higher-up puts his foot down and says 'no!'. And what's the number one issue in most cases? Vacation. 'Oh', say the moronic fucking idiots higher up, 'we have to make "maximum use" of our foreigners'. Yeah, that's bloody bright - making sure as many as possible only stay for one year or less. That's using foreigners to the max now, isn't it.
So far things have been all right with my school but we'll see. If I do leave, it will be because of the school district and not my school, and likely over time off. |

If I renew it will be a private contract with the school and not with Gyeonggi. I've been giving this a lot of thought and I will not teach camps for summer for sure. If they say otherwise I will simply not re-sign. I don't care about Gyeonggi. Simply tell them to hire a new teacher or negotiate a private contract if possible.

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to squeeze any extras out of my school. They always stick to the contract like glue.
4 weeks holiday per year insted of two? Wow  That's not to be sneezed at even if they do dictate whenyou can take them. I agree the winter and summer camps suck. I don't get any extra time to prepare stuff for camp in advance.
The first year, it really irked me that the K teachers got way more holiday than me, but apparently that is because I am on a contract and I was told that there are K teachers in the same situation as me at my school.
Whether that is actually true remains to be seen.
The question is are you prepared to go out on a limb and go and work for another school, which might be worse than your present school, or stay where you are?

So far I've got way more holiday time than the KTs who are on short-term contracts, plus they have to invigilate on test days and do lots of extra work at special events. On the other hand, I also do a lot of extra only-the-foreigner-could-do-that jobs. |
