Vegemite is an American brand, so why ban it in your own country?

AUSTRALIANS travelling to the US can breathe easy. So can the 100,000 or so Australian expatriates living in America.

The US government today dismissed media reports it had banned Vegemite.

"There is no ban on Vegemite," US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokesman Mike Herndon said.

It might have been bought by an international (American) corporation, but that doesn't make it an American brand. Think of all products in Korea that are produced by foreign corporations but sold only in Korea... If Kraft bought a kimchi plant that wouldn't make it American.

It's made in Australia, but the parent company is American owned.
