I just booked my ticket to Bangkok for Dec. 22-31st, and was wondering if anyone knew of any nice places to go for this time of year.
I hear a lot about Phuket, but I'm expecting it to be full of tourists! Will it be extremely crowded? I'm interested in some of the night life..but a friend told me there are places that are almost deserted. I keep imagining beautiful beaches with hardly anyone there. Do these places exist? And still within a reasonable area to do other stuff? Thanks! |

Yes, December is high season in Phuket. Don't expect to find deserted beaches near the tourist areas for obvious reasons. There is good news however. On the island, and a boat ride away you can find quiet beaches, some are deserted. You'll just have to be prepared to go the extra mile. "Zark" is the authority on Phuket. I'm sure he'll be able to give you some advice. |

Nightlife and other "activities" - and deserted beaches - often don't go well together. Or, are quite distant from each other.
That said - yes there are some quieter beaches to be found. Nai Thon, Nai Yang, Nai Harn - all are about as far away from the tourist centers of Patong, Karon, and Kata as you can get - so expect a 30-40+ minute drive/ride into the "nightlife" areas if you want some of that.
Try "Phuket's Best Beaches" for a start:

and what I meant was finding a quiet beach during the day, and then going to the nightlife at night. so transportation should'nt be a problem? |

I stayed on Koh Phangan in June. While its famous for the Full Moon Party, that is only in one city. I stayed at the otehr end of the island (its still a pretty small island). We stayed at Mae Haad View Resort on Mae Haad beach. A really nice family runs the resort. Its more like stayin with a family than at some sterile resort. You can get a beach front bungalow (no AC or flush toilet) fro about 200 baht a night, maybe less in low season. You can walk out to a coral reef during the day and snorkel. Take the canoes out at sunset. If you want pictures, PM me. There are several bugnalow resorts here, but we were there in low season and I think there were about 10 other people staying on the entire beach.
You can hang out at the beach and then motorbike to Haad Rin for some nightlife. Its about a 40 minute bike ride. |
