Kenny MacLean

SAINT JOHN - Saint John Sea Dogs management are hanging their heads in shame after aging pop star Kenny MacLean slaughtered the national anthem in front of thousands of shocked fans Thursday night.

Quote:
The bass player of '80s pop band Platinum Blonde who took centre ice appeared to have no memory of O Canada. Singing in English and French, the artist made up most of the words, mixed up the song's order and tripped over the lyrics he tried to read from a piece of paper. "It was just wrong," said Turk. "It wasn't offensive, he wasn't trying to make a statement, he just didn't know the national anthem."

Quote:
The reaction was as unnerving as the band's poodle-permed hairstyles. The audience booed him off the stage screaming "learn the lyrics."

All day Friday Harbour Station and Sea Dogs management were flooded with angry e-mails and phone calls from proud Canadians.

Turk said he was deeply sorry for the embarrassing and offensive version of Canada's anthem.

The Sea Dogs issued a press release stating, "Mr. MacLean's performance was disgraceful and an embarrassment. It is deeply regretted."

When the team agreed to have MacLean perform, Turk was told the artist was a "veteran performer and a professional." In an admittedly huge mistake, the team did not require MacLean to audition.

Why do we even have to play the national anthem before each and every sporting event? Couldn't we just save it for international matches or the Stanley Cup Finals? It's not like we're Yanks or Koreans.

Sure, perhaps the expectation of crowds standing, hand over heart at the start of every single game of anything is a bit much.

Still, aging, Scots, poodle haried or otherwise, any idiot who knows he's getting up to sing, in front of a crowd of more than three, should show enough professionalism and respect to learn the song beforehand.

This is real life Krusty the Clown stuff.

Man, he didn't even need to know it. It's not as if O'Canada is a difficult song to sing. All he had to do was rehearse it once and keep the lyrics on an easle in case he fudged it.

My guess is he didn't rehearse...or he was too out of it to remember. Either way, it's a very effective way to commit professional suicide.

I remember once in Vegas, before one of those temporary CFL expansion teams, a Vegas lounge singer got the job of singing the anthems. He didn't bother to learn how to sing the Canadian anthem and sung it to the tune of "O Christmas Tree".

Rock on!

Platinum Blonde, in all its 'glory'...

Fewww. I had to browse through a lot of pictures to find this on Google Images. Who would have thunk that a search for 'platinum blonde' would have come up so many pictures of blonde-haired women stuffing their nether regions with assorted latex toys?

A dictionary. When I'm curious about words and their meanings I've found there's a book called a dictionary that provides a list of words and their meanings.

I remember that! That was hilarious. But wasn't it at a Shreveport Pirates game? You'd think that with stuff like that and marines marching in with the Canadian flag upside-down they could just can the whole silly business. At least it's not like going to an NHL hockey game in St Louis where they have a public service announcement at the beginning that includes a request to refrain from using foul language during the game.
