I finish my existing Hagwon contract at the end of December.
I'm thinking about going public next year (sane hours, guaranteed pay, less teaching contact etc).

I plan to go to Thailand and have a much needed vacation in January. I may take a CELTA course in January to early Feb.

Can I apply for Korean public school jobs from Thailand - or do I have to be in Korea for an interview??

When do the Middle school/High school jobs start next year????
I keep reading about 'interviewing' in January. What does this involve???

I emailed 2 recruiters asking for pay info but haven't received any replies. Is everyone eligible for these jobs??

I have 2 years Hagwon experience teaching adults, businessmen, Korean teachers, and school kids. I have a non-English major related Masters degree, a double B.A., and some study toward a Ph.D. What salary can I expect for these quals/experience ????

Will I get a higher public school salary if I get a CELTA?
I'd appreciate any comments and information.

PS. I've applied for uni jobs this year, but no luck yet. (I guess my face/age/accent just doesn't fit).

(Numbers are mine)

1. No, you don't have to be in Korea to land one of these jobs, but of course it helps. Employers prefer to pay for a trip to Japan over a trip across half the world.

2. March

3. Pretty much exactly what your hakwon interview consisted of: Are you white and breathing.

4. Yes.

5. Pretty much what you are getting at the hakwon. W2.2 million. Qualifications and experience are not really what employers in Korea are looking for.

6. You MIGHT get a bigger salary, but I doubt it. You might be able to do a better job in the classroom, though.

Yes. You can apply at the Korean embassy/consulate in Thailand. Yes you will recieve aproximately 200,000 - 300,000 won more if you have a CELTA or a TESOL/TEFL certificate over 100 hours. And you will receive more money if you have more than two years documented teaching experience. A letter from your previous hogwans will suffioce. Public schools are always hiring, however, the main drives are in March and September.

I was in Thailand when I applied for my Public School position and had no major inconveniences. FedEx or other express mail service fees are cheap (about 12,300 won) and the Korean embassy was friendly and helpful. There is a thread in the Travel section that gives you all the details on how to find the embassy.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if it was worth doing a celta or do Korean public schools consider a non-English major masters as equivalent to a CELTA (for pay scales).
Thanks for more info.

A non-English major Masters is fine. I have little experience, but I have a Masters degree and therefore I'm paid 2.4m at my public school.
