My God i am going to work in Naju. Does anyone know anything about it as I have no idea?
Just finished Uni and couldn't stand living near or with parents so i'm off for a year. Where I live in Wales isn't that interesting. Wanted to go to West Indies instead.
How did anyone else decide to get up and leave their own country to teach? Suppose i'm doing it for the adventure or something like that. Maybe to have my life changed in that i'll see the world in a different light.
O yer and the beer i suppose which is always good.

here's a link to your first question...http://english.naju.go.kr/
Sorry, that's all I know.
You're 2nd question re: how did any of us pick up and leave their country to go teach? Wow, heavy question. I assume you were being rhetorical with that one.
Naju, sounds like you took an ETIK job. |

Oh dear! Naju is as dead as the proverbial doe doe. I have been there a couple of times. It is soooo small. Downtown is a joke. One street is all I counted. It is very close to Kwangju though which is the 5th largest city in Korea. Buses run every 10 mins at a cost of 700 won.(35 pence) It takes about 30 minutes to Kwangju downtown. Good luck. |

Hi...
Naju is conveniently located between Mokpo and Gwangju, so you shouldn't be too far out of the loop when it comes to city life. You also have the option of putting yourself out of the loop of city life when things get to be too much for you in Gwangju or Mokpo.
I can say I have only been through Naju, and it looks very...idyllic. Try to uncover the foreigner scene there, as there is at least one university and god knows how many hagwans out there, before spending all your time and money to come out to Gwangju. |

Naju is good. It is, as Gwangjuboy and katydid said, located nicely between two great cities. Naju is famous for pears, and trust me, they rock. It is also famous for gom-tung, a soup made various ways, usually with the cows stomach or something. Its good. The city itself has a nice setting, with beautiful hills on the north side which make for nice hikes and views of the city and farm lands. Might be bored with your off time, though. Not much in the way of cool coffee shops, bars, or anything. As said you will need to head to Gwangju for that. And there are many buses that will take you there. |

try to look at it positively as a chance to enjoy or develop new skills/ pastimes: Hiking, Birdwatching, learning korean, meditation, painting, your own private study (correspondence diploma?), whatever..
Quiet time to yourself for any length of time is actually a rare thing in this world. make the most of it!!!!
I guess we're going to see a lot of you on here in the future? |

Of course you are going to see a lot of me on this forum thingy.
Cheers for the info.
Think I will buy a learn guitar book here in Britain and try and buy a cheap guitar out there.
Naju sounds alright by the sounds of it. Quiet when you need it to be.
Spoke to some irish girl who i am sort of replacing out there and she said the EFL teachers just meet up and do stuff.

I meant that as in ETIK Recruiting. They are an agency that tends to have gigs in the nooks and crannies of Korea. EPIK is a little different in spelling and their corporate purpose, but not much. |

They meet up and go to bars. Either that or bowling. Sometimes tourism. I could tell you everything that will happen to you from the time you get there until the time you leave, but we aren't supposed to do that (ruins it for the new people). You will have no trouble meeting foreigners and making friends. It is extremely easy. |

I had a friend that worked in Naju for a year at a boys' high school (with the Fulbright ETA prog.) and she really liked it. Of course, she had requested a rural area so she may have been coming from a different place than you. There are some universities nearby (I think one is Donshin University or something) and she met some Korean friends there. I don't think she was a person who picked up languages super-easy, but she really learned a lot of Korean while she was there...and TaeKwonDo too. I visited a few times and the locals were really friendly. The thing that I think I would miss most there is the companionship of other foreigners, but you can always go to Mokpo or Kwangju on the weekends. |
