People have been mentioning that there isn't a good hagwon blacklist website. They're mostly outdated information and the search engine in Daves isnt very efficient.

I propose this thread to keep track of all the dishonest hagwon for the newbies as follows:

1. If you have complaint or problem with your hagwon, you should open your own tread to make a detailed complaint and/or assistance.

2. On this thread, you should only make posting of the name of the hagwon, location, and the link to your thread.

3. If you have complaint or some problem with existing hagwon in this thread, you should also create your own thread of complaint and just add the link to your thread to same hagwon posting. Otherwords, if there are multiple complaints about one hagwon, there should be two links to a hagwon posting in this thread.

Heres an example:

Um, you do realize that this site makes its money off of hogwons recruiting teachers. If a hogwon is advertising on here, and is blacklisted here as well, most likely that blacklist will be removed.

Great idea. All of us who have worked for a crap hogwan that has no respect for teachers whatsoever and just rips off gullible Korean parents should get a sock, name the hogwan and director, and post anonymously from a PC-bang stating exactly what goes on there. We should have an alphabetical listing by name and location.

Personally the abuse of vigilantes for personal gain are as rampant as shady hagwons.

Only an official institute should create black hagwon lists based on verifiable facts.

So, then someone (not residing in Korea and unable to get sued) chould be appointed fact-checker (I could certainly provide references for mine) and post up all the details on a US-based server.

And how you would verify said facts? Most of the time we get one side of the story and without even pausing to consider whether this individual has a axe to grind or is simply a troll, people automatically side with him. Any individuals who ask for the other side or for more facts are labled as apologists.

Remember that thread a while back where a certain individual was making certain claims about a person being beat up? And when the other side of the story emerged it showed quite clearly that there were several lies/exaggerations that took place. And then there was Denise and a few such other trolls over the years.

But again how exactly would you verify such claims? Mostly it comes down to a He said/She said thing. I don't know too many ESL teachers who would be willing to give a stranger details of their bank balance or other personal information for instance. I'd be wary of ID theft for one.

The thing is:

This site is a business. It is not for exposing hakwons and their ilk. While I agree that there are certainly hakwons that NEED exposing there are two problems.

1. Conflict of interest. If a teacher says Kim's Top English hakwon is bad and Kim's Top English hakwon is advertising here...what do you think will happen? Will the post or ad be yanked?

2. Truth is not a defense against libel in Korea.

Maybe Expats would be willing to run something like this. Or someone should start their own website if they feel so strongly about it.

By and large I have found that packing a brain and spine when you come to Korea tends to work very well when it comes to not getting jerked around...but maybe that's just me.

Most of you, except for a few hagwon owners I guess, have said it's a good idea.

So I will volunteer my time to post the hawon name, location, and thread link.

However, I will need your help. For those of you who have posted some warnings or complaints about particular hagwon, please send me a PM message only including following:

1. Hagwon's Name
2. Location
3. Link to the thread.

For those of you who are concerned with verification and validity of complaints, since there will be a entire thread relating to the complaint against a hagwon, the opposing party can always rebut the claim of complaints on that same thread.

So don't look at this as the hagwon blacklist thread, but as the warning thread. It'll be something that people can refer to to find out what has been said about a particular hagwon. Based on these information, I believe people will be able to ask more informed questions to the hagwon and can make better decision either to accept or not to accept the teaching position offered.

I don't think this is a good idea. While some hagwons do deserve to die a slow miserable death, there are a lot of jokers here that do too.

So, some jackass gets fired for coming to work smashed too many times. He goes home, pounds some soju, and decides to put his hagwon on a blacklist? Don't know about that. Bet it would happen too.

You said it - not me. And just what does that say about the country? You can get in trouble with the law for telling the truth. That's just all the more reason for a site idea like this one.

In order to balance it out hogwan owners should be contacted and asked to respond.

Hold your horses. We haven't decided if a thread like this is even going to fly, let alone gotten a PM from you proposing the idea. The issue for us here is not about the protection of site revenue, otherwise we would be pulling all blacklist threads that show up here. Looking at how popular the contract thread has become, having a centralized blacklist thread will also become very visible which will begin to carry risks, given that it might invite an increase of the wrong kind of traffic. In an environment of anonymous posters, proxy IPs, some heavy drinkers that have a history of playing pranks, the increased risk of fabricated claims in a one-sided story, rival recruiters posting as teachers to blacklist their competitor or a school that stiffed them on a placement fee, etc...There are a ton of variables that would have to be looked at to confirm the veracity of the claims.

Regardless of who votes for what, nothing happens until we've had a chance to hash ideas out. We've had lengthy debate on this in the past in the mod forum on how it might be possible to execute something like this and we're going to bring it up again now, but you won't be the one pulling the trigger on this. You can PM us your ideas, however.
