Some parents want to tape me while I am teaching their kids, and show it to their families and others to show them that their kids are attending a hogwan where an ACTUAL WHITE MAN is employed. Think about that- A WHITE MAN is teaching their kids. Rolling Eyes

The school director thinks this is a WONDERFUL idea and that it would drum up business for the hogwan.

Anyone have any opinions on this subject? Any reasons why I should or shouldn't do it? Personally, I don't give a flying ----, but LMK what you think (only IF you think- okay?). Wink

Do you, like, have to dress up and stuff? Then I say, no. If not, I say -- lighs, camera, action.

Nothing about dressing up- just videotaping a regular class (just imagine how uptight the kids will be with parents in the room- with a camera!).

I wouldn't care, but I wouldn't want it to happen every day, or every time a parent buys a new video camera!! Set some limits (say one day a month is "video the white guy" day) and have a well-prepared, well-loved game on that day...something where the kids will forget the camera and have a good time.

Wanna earn some brownie points? This is a good way. He is in business and YOU are the product.

If the product is not good then the business will go bad. Bad business for him means *beep* for you.

Good business means your pay is regular and on-time.

Time for us to all remember that we are a commodity (product offered for rent) in a business (ESL) and NOT teachers in primary education.

Just my humble opinion.

I didn't want to have any open classes. When wonjangoverlord got the idea I screamed, "Die Motherfu--er!" and threw a bookshelf at him. Then I told him to buy a video camera and that I would shoot a bunch of my classes, edit them together and make a school video. I had the students take turns operating the camera, which keeps pesky parents out of the class and the kids from acting unusually self-conscious. I haven't finished the video yet, partly because of technical difficulties, mostly because I am the laziest editor in the world.

Remember you'd have zero control over what happens with this video, where it goes, and who makes money off of it. Are you ready for it to live forever online? I wouldn't do it.

babtangee's got the right idea. Take a bit of control over the process and be sure to keep a copy to add to your portfolio. You don't necessarily have to do any serious editing but you could record specific portions of the lesson in sequence. I did this exact thing (without being asked) when I taught a kid's class for our continuing education program at the University I was teaching for. I made sure that I was shown on film engaging each and every child and then I edited it and burned it to disc and sent it home with every kid. The parents and the kids loved it and it kept our enrollment up and my overtime padded. Another good reason for you to actually create the video is that you then legally own the copyright. If anyone does post your video on the web you'd have a legal claim for it's removal.

ttompatz is right. This is a business and it's in our interests to market both for ourselves and for the organizations we work for.

Good luck and have fun.

Ask them for a little extra, some money or valuable commodity in exchange for your acting in their little movie.

Say you'll direct and Brando is interested in your playing you and Paulie Shore is desperate to play an annoying little Korean kid.

You should write a script and the boss can produce. Have some music too.

A real professional piece of propaganda.

I think videoing several classes and editing sounds like the best bet, if you are willing to do that kind of work and know how.

Say no and retain your self respect. You are a human being. Not a dancing monkey.

Nope, you are hired as a dancing monkey. Time to perform for your peanuts.
