I hear the rumblings about the get-together changing the dynamics of the dave's.
Any pros or cons about the get-together's? Would you prefer having get-togethers or going without them all-together?
How do you think the get-togethers change the dynamics of this board? Do get-together weaken the "debate/discussion" aspects of this board?
Your honest opinion is greatly appreciated. |

Checked out koreanesl, read the anti-semitic rant. Thank God for moderators, eh?
As for get-togethers, I don't attend them, though I might if one were held in Gwangju. I don't see how you can stop people from meeting up. I suppose you could ban threads inviting people to attend them, but then the organizers could just send out private mail invitations anyway. As for board dynamics, I would hope that people respond to a post based on what the poster has written, not on their memories of the great time they had or didn't have with them on Friday night. I suppose I find the slew of threads that are actually ABOUT the get-togethers a tad self-indulgent, probably such reminiscing could be carried on through pm. Then again, nobody forces me to read those threads. Overall, not a big issue for me. |

seems like a good idea to me.
if getting together changes the interaction on the board..well..that seems logical.
I would like to think it is a positive change. |

Why would just meeting someone change your personal views?
I think it might make it easier to understand the other persons actual perspective and character. What can be wrong with that? |

I apparently have not attended one and therefore my idea might not be as influential as one who has.
But, I tend to feel rather negative on the idea of group get-togethers on an arraigned basis. I think it would be much better however to have them, and this is where I might like the idea, more so as private and in otherwords having them for personal need of interaction and not as a way of openly making it a reason for anyone and everyone on the website to know one another.
The reason I think that is because yes expatriates definately need one another in a foreign land, but it shouldn't be that some or many users have a bond on a website. That would make the website less of a free have-at-it discussion atmosphere. To make a quick example, I played this online multiplayer game (over dsl) a while back. Many of the settings were fun because everyone was individualistic, and you actually made buddies as well as enemies. But then, there were also these 'clans' of game players that all kept in touch and had private email chats with each other, and their 'player names' all reflected they were apart of a same clan. Usually I found them to be much less fun, more dictatorial than the more free-market game servers.
Anyways, more 'unofficial' get togethers where people make friends privately I think is better than openly so. |

I've been to all of them except the first one and don't have any problems with them nor with them changing the nature of the board. On the upside it allows a lot of networking to go on especially if you come from out of Seoul. I've also met a lot of people and have struck up some decent friendships with.
Does it affect my moderating? For me no, I've been in this postion before as a referee many, many times before and I hope people realize that what I do here isn't personal. I'm just here to enforce the rules. I've edited/deleted posts from many people I've had a conversation/drink with.
Regarding the nature of the board. I hope the get-togethers help reduce a general tone of nastiness that these boards can generate. Good debate is fine and we still see some. Its the name calling that bothers me and by putting a face to the name I hope reduces this.
Besides it gives me/us a good excuse to come to Seoul. Gwangju is sooooooooooo booorrrrrrrriiiiiinnggg sometimes |

It's about so much more than just this board, Trinny. If the phenomenon really catches on, it could very well change the dynamics of the entire peninsula. Unification could occur far quicker than anyone ever imagined. After that, it's potential for achieving worldwide peace and understanding is probably not a matter of if, but only when? We will be able to look back on it someday and take pride in the fact that we were part of it from the very beginning.
Then again, I might be overreaching just a bit. |
