for those of you unclear with the reference:

Quote:
The Nine Nations of North America was a book written in 1981 by Joel Garreau. According to the book, North America can be divided into nine regions, or "nations," which have distinctive economic and cultural features. He argues that conventional national and state borders are largely artificial and irrelevant and that his "nations" provide a more accurate way of understanding the true nature of North American society.

I agree with the book's premise. But I'd really like to know why he calls my home 'the empty quarter'! Last time I was there it was quite full of things..

I read the book 4 or 5 years ago. I think it has something to do with the relative population density. Although I could be wrong.

Um, a bit more than that, more like about the prevailing opinons, regional attitudes and the like. The map would likely need to be redrawn a bit after 25 years.

I'm a New Englander according to the map you posted.

I always thought I was a Maritimer. I wasn't aware of this. Learn something new everyday Smile

I'm from there too, and it's pretty desolate. All we have is oil and steers.

I think it's because of a shared love of drinking beer in the kitchen...

I remember the book.

But, somehow the map doesn't look quite right.

Wasn't that followed by Druckers Corporatism and a few other such.

The premise is sound, but the map is very poorly drawn. The cartographer must have been a fourth-grader. As a geography major, I'm offended when crap like that gets taken at face-value.

Why doesn't Quebec get a new name? Couldn't they be 'Frogland' or something?

With more Mex and lesst Tex, what is the result on the food? I like Tex/Mex and i would hate to have that delicate balance be ruined with to much Mex.

Without meaning to start a rat hole.

Wasn't Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma all part of Mexico at one point (not to mention California)?
