My school has decided to make me work for a year and a day...Do I have to?
I don't want to spend a second more in this place than I have to...can I tell them to go to hell? After all this will be payslip 13 if i work that extra day and I signed a contract for 12 months.
Just wait until this is all over...I have some storied to tell you about this school!

Heres what I think
* Work the extra day. While it maybe above and beyond your contract, its just one day.
* Tell them you want to be home for Christmas. If they still say you have to work that day, perhaps offer to take one days pay cut.
Have you talked to them and said you dont think its reasonable?
I dont know the back stories of your school and what they were like, but you stuck it out for a year and one extra day isnt a big difference. Especailly being your last day you can play games all day or whatever. I personally wouldnt risk losing pay or my bonus over one day of work. |

I am guessing they don't want to pay your airfare home because right before Christmas airfare goes way up. Can you still LEGALLY work that extra day???? I thought visas were for one year only. Suggest working overtime hours at no charge to make up for the hours of that last day. And if you are desperate to get home, maybe tell them you will pay the difference in airfare prices before and after Christmas. But I would look into whether it is legal. Maybe hint that you thought it was illegal and maybe you should check with immigration...just to make sure you and the school cannot be fined. Pretend to look out for their interest while you look out for yourself.
But I agree with sheba, you may be losing out on lots of things if you make them mad at this point. |

They want you to work because your replacement wants the holidays off!
If you have been unhappy throughout the year and the owners have been jerks...then screw 'em and leave. They didn't care about you.
But..if you had no problems, pay was always on time, etc....what's an extra day. |

Trust me, I've been unhappy...I don't want to work another 13 hour day for them if I don't have to...
I'm just wondering what they can do if I refuse to work...
They threaten to fire people for any refusal of "duties".
I don't really want to risk losing my flight and bonus at the 11th hour.
I can't wait until this contract is over...the naming and shaming will begin. |

My current (soon to be ex) employer wanted me to extend for 3 days.
Immigration told him that he couldn't do that on a 12 month E2 visa. And neither can you.
You could extend your visa (free) for 10 days - to do the extra day, but why bother if they have been nasty. Just tell them it's illegal and that you have to be out of the country by 12 midnight on the day stated on the back of your ARC card. |
