|
|
My girlfriend just bought a computer component stateside, and had it shipped to Korea. The peripheral cost $109 US. She did not label it as a gift. It was not used. Still, we figured customs would be like 25,000 won. Maybe 30,000.
They called us and want 100,000 won! Are we getting jacked? What are my options? Am I going to have to just bend over on this one, or is there recourse? I don't know if someone is trying to roll a waygook or if it actually costs that much.
Can I request to see the written fee schedule or something?
Any help is appreciated.
PS:If it has occurred to you to tell me what we should have done, don't waste your time. Right now I'm trying to figure out where to go from here. I know all about marking it USED GOODS/GIFT, etc. I'm just trying to find out if 100,000 won is the real figure or if I'm getting robbed by an opportunistic "entrepreneur." |

I have had a similar situation, where the amount the post office said was due was outrageous. Took a Korean with me to the post office, one who's got the - - oh, what do they call it here in Korea,; I've forgotten - - something like "han" - - a kind of way of talking and being that communicates "you are a lowly civil servant and I am royalty." The amount paid was done by schedule and it was less than 1/3 what the original note said it was.
If you go there with your girlfriend, and she is Korean, she may be able to insist on seeing in writing what the duty should be on the part. I do know they're seriously threatened by the import of anything computer-related, seeing it as a national security threat to their economic lifeline: export and domestic sale of the same, so the duty probably is high.
If you can get an authoritative male Korean to go with you, or to call the post office to check it out, - - and I mean one who isn't going to "ah la sal yo" to them in one sentence flat - - that would be a better bet.
Or, maybe somebody here knows a website that lists these kinds of customs duty schedules. Perhaps the post office itself has such a site. I'll ask a Korean I know and post back if I find anything out. |
