Or perhaps any newspaper, period. I wish I had the link but there isn't one.
It was in the Korea Times today. Apparently some part-time professor in Korea received an e-mail one day offering to put him some Who's Who-type books if he pays their exorbitant fees. "How did they hear about my research?" he wonders. "How did they hear about me??" as his breast swells with pride. "I'd better sign up right away!"
So he does. In 6 books. and the fricken Korea Times writes him up. With a big proud picture. Wow. It should have been in the Yangpa. |

Imagine getting an e-mail - not an ordinary e-mail reminding you when to pay your bills or confirming next week�s meeting, but one giving you a chance at having your biography published in a book full of names glimmering with prestige.
What would you do? �I almost deleted it,� said Han Chang-wook, professor of engineering at Yeungnam University, who was listed in eight of world�s biographical dictionaries. �I thought it was junk mail at first.� Han was first contacted by the U.S. publisher Marquis last year after someone nominated him for the 2006 edition of �Who�s Who in the World.�
�I�m still not sure who nominated me, but the company got in touch with me to confirm my profile and professional experience,� explained the 35-year-old professor. �After I sent them the information they needed, they reviewed my eligibility and notified me again that I would be listed in the dictionary.�
Since his lexicon debut, Han was featured numerous times in other Marquis publications and most recently, he was approached by British publisher IBC to be featured in next year�s �Dictionary of International Biographies. �
The part-time professor and researcher is currently studying Computer Intelligence (CI). He wrote about 35 theses and gave several presentations at notable international conferences, which led him to stand out among others. �I�m still young in my career, but am incredibly honored to be recognized already,� Han said humbly.
As a Taegu native, Han completed his undergraduate, master�s and doctorate degrees all at Yeungam University, which is at the heart of his hometown. He�s often been referred to as a �native doctor� because few doctorate degree holders with promise stay in their local communities. However, Han had a turning point during a conference trip to Australia in 2000. �That�s when I realized that I needed to go abroad to study because when I was doing my master�s, I didn�t even consider leaving Korea,� he said. �I wanted to do my post-doctorate outside of Korea.�
After sending out more than 500 e-mails to professors worldwide, Han heard back from very few and even they gave him grim replies as they pointed out his language problems.
December 2001 was when the all-time Taegu native was given a chance. �I got an e-mail from a professor at the University of Alberta in Canada,� he said. �He offered me a position, and I didn�t hesitate.�
After completing his post-doctoral studies over a year, Han returned to Korea and has taught as a non-faculty professor at Yeungnam University since March 2004.
�I�m glad to be teaching students now and studying my area of interest at the same time,� said Han. �But I would like to soon become a full-time professor and expand my research as well.�
Asked if he would step outside of his local arena once more, Han replies with a firm no. �Not because I don�t want to teach in Seoul or a bigger city in Korea, but the reality of winning a professor position is so tough these days that I would be better off staying local for now,� he said.
As a father of two sons, Han enjoys working with students and giving them advice on their careers. He explained that when students come seeking guidance, he usually recommends they go overseas to broaden their perspective.
Han adds that he made it quite far considering his childhood dream. �My dream was to become a taxi driver because driving seemed so much fun,� he said laughing. �But because my father was an elementary school teacher, I must have acquired a passion to teach.� |

| I will miss LA but when I am In korea maybe I can stop hearing about the TOMKAT wedding or the Bradgelina etc etc... you think the Professor thing is hilarious, B. Spears Divorces K-Fed is like nightly news. GOD!!!! Now THATS just retardo.... |

| As a person who has published a few and not notable poems, I was very impressed to meet the author of five, count 'em, five books of poetry. I was humbled that he had been looking forward to meeting me. Then I found out he had paid for all the publishing himself. Had sold almost none, and esentially they were just his physical extension of ego. I have heard of vanity publishing before.....but five books? |

It's weird that the article doesn't mention a damn thing about what readers would want to know, such as what some of his theses were about, what his current research is about, and what could possibly have led to his inclusion in the (eight??) books.
But at least it used the phrases 'glimmering with prestige' and 'lexicon debut'. 
Man I love Korean reporting. It's so phenomonally bad. |
