I came home the other night and my laptop's HD was full from my P2P so Peerguardian had a stack of error messages on my desktop.

I closed the group, disconnected my LAN and restarted my laptop.

Normally there is a "Windows System Config." window that I have to click through a couple times. A friend of mine made changes to it so that I could monitor the registry a little bit every time I start up to make sure that nothing is latched on and mucking up the works.

Anyway, that window is gone. I didn't undo the system changes that guy made.

My work PC is on the fritz, probably a virus or worm, possibly the sasser as somebody on here suggested. Is it possible that somehow the infection spread to my laptop in my home?

I haven't downloaded anything I saved at my work computer, but I check my email all the time there (of course)... so...

It just seems a little strange that something like those changes would just disapppear from my laptop.

if at any point in time you had your two machines connected somehow (via network or send an email from one machine and download the email contents onto the other machine), then yes. It is possible that you have contracted the same virus. As a matter of fact, it's highly likely.

I don't think I have downloaded any email attachments from work.

Is it possible that a virus/worm could do that with my System Config. ?

Do you have an antivirus program runnning on your notebook? If you do, then you can probably rule out a virus and a worm.

It's always worth paying money for a legit Anti Virus program, such as Norton or McAffee.

If you can still hook up to the Net, then head over to Trend Micro, and try their free Trend Micro House Call virus scanner. It'll scan your HDD, but it won't get rid of anything.

That way you can determine what your next steps should be. If it turns out you don't have a virus, then try doing a system restore (XP) or a registry restore (Win 98/ME).

If all else fails, run a good Registry Cleaner. It could be that some programs you downloaded changed changed registry settings. Check out download.com for good, and free, registry cleaners (just make sure they have good ratings from other users).

CrapCleaner or CCleaner is good for cleaning up useless files and also a bloated registry.
