I came in to work 30 minutes early today to get some extra work done, only to find out that all but one of my classes has been cancelled. It turns out Grade 1 and Grade 2 went to 'applaud' the Grade 3 test takers. For some unknown reason, they won't be coming to school at all.
So I'm hoping for a new Dave's scandal or international crisis so I'll have something to do for most of the day. |

Isn't today a national holiday?
Something like college entrance exam day for high school seniors? |

Yup, same here. Place is empty. So empty in fact, when I had to let one go a while ago, I just let her rip. It was very satisfying in such a puerile way to audibly fart in the teachers office. |

Well we are all here - minus the 3rd graders... and everyone is peeved - in fact I smell MUTINY.
Apparently for my schools entire 48 year history the younger studetns go to support the seniors and the teachers have a booze-up and an afternoon off.
This year - new Principal (who is an absolute fool) has cancelled the tradition. Fair enough I suppose - but he cancelled it LAST period yesterday.
Anyway we're here - but not a lot is getting done! |

Same here.
The 1st and 2nd Graders did come to wish the 3rd Graders well, but all the teachers are also spread far and wide invigilating the exams at other schools and centres.

For some reason it's much less of a big deal this year. Last year a whole bunch of the grade 2s and teachers went to Masan where our students write it to cheer them on and this year only a couple of extra teachers pluse the grade 3 homeroom teachers went, for whatever reason. We still had our 'cheer the grade 3s on' assembly on Monday, but that was it. One of the English teachers told me the reason is because the CSAT is becomming much less important, so if that's the case, I say great.
My best grade 2 class was unusually lame today, however. Perhaps the fact that they have to go through the same everyday routine instead of today being down-time as they had perhaps hoped had something to do with it. |

I teach a two hour one-on-one from 9:30AM to 11:30AM at my office, before taking the University shuttle to campus. That MF didn't show today so I've been lurking all three sites all morning. |

How do you "cheer on" people taking standardized tests? Like silent cheers or something? Are the tests taken on stage in an auditorium or something, with the spectators in general admission seats? |

Planes aren't even allowed to fly near the schools during the test. or in Korea. or something.
The kids not taking the test go to 'save' seats at the school where the Korean SATS are being held. Mine went from 3 am this morning!!
They do the cheer before the exam starts.
SATS are like a sport here!!
Just found an article at the Herald. http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2006/11/17/200611170010.asp |

Ah, Korean vanity knows almost no bounds. You do realize, that, like saying, "I worked/studied til 1AM!" that this is simply another form of bragging about themselves--"Oh, I saved seat from 3AM!" "Oh yeah, I saved seat from 2AM! (so I must be more focused on my studies than your miserable self and family...)" |
