Fan death could be real, but only if it were one of those ceiling fans and it fell down on you (which actually happened to me.) Lucky for me it was on low speed at the time.

The fan I just bought in America has a variety of warnings ("DO NOT OPERATE WITH FEET MISSING." but has no mention of not sleeping with the fan. See, I guess it doesn't affect foreigners...or Koreans living in the US.

A colleague was out drinking with a senior (student, not elder) the other night, and after a few drinks she asked him about his belief in fan death. He conceded that it is probably not true for adults, but is absolutely true about children. This is an excellent student.

I can see where one could believe it about children, though. There are people in the U.S. who will get rid of their cats when they have babies, because it is believed that a cat will suck the baby's breath. I know this is the case even with educated adults. It has been rationalized now to believing that cats will go to sleep on top of the baby and suffocate it. Nobody wants to experiement with the safety of children. You know, better safe than sorry.

Doctors back in the day suggested getting rid of cats for 2 reasons. Cat dander is a known allergin and does cause respiratory problems. Babies don't have the strongest immune system so can't really cope with copious amounts of cat dandruff and hair particles going into their lil lungs.

Fan death....it all started back in the 80's. Some genius (must have been a SNU graduate) came forward and said that fans push the air away from people so in a closed room you would suffocate. It was instantaneously a hit and all over the media, in the classrooms, and on everybody's lips. Anybody who's been in Korea for any length of time knows what great lemmings these people are and that they aren't too keen when it comes to critical thinking. Of course noone consulted a physics text or even thought to ask "huh?" they all blindly followed some old guy; "he's old, he must know what he's talking about!".

There you have it.

I had a near death fan experience once: I saw a guy on David Letterman stop a running fan with his tongue. When I tried to replicate his stunt, i cut my lip pretty badly. Embarassed
