Yep I've been here a few weeks now - not on the mainland and not in a city. I've never given up on anything before but at the end of my tether on this one. Finish at 10.30pm - school makes me go in at 1.30 pm (contrary to contract) - freezing flat, freezing school, no resources, children no command of the Eng;ish language - they just memorise. Also all attempts to meet people here thwarted - well im the only foreigner at my school and in my village. Foreigners in the local city all much younger and American/Canadian. I'm 32 and I dont have a social problem, I love to party etc maybe too much.
So apart from lecturing me about the honourable thing to do. If I was to leave in the next couple of days .. could I re-enter the country again and work on the mainland?? Obviously with the beauty of hindsight I should have gone to Seoul. |

First the proverbial slap in the head - Be sure to check out your prospective new school better than you did your current one. People who DON'T do their due diligence always end up in situations like yours.
Now to answer your question:
IF you pull a runner AND your boss cancels your visa so he can get a new monkey you can re-enter on a tourist stamp, look for a new job and do a visa run. Make sure you hand in your ARC on your way out of the country.
IF you pull a runner and your boss DOESN'T cancel your visa to get himself a new monkey you MAY NOT be able to get a new visa until your current one expires.
You can attempt to do the honorable thing, give notice, maybe get screwed on your pay AND get a Letter of Release. The LOR will allow you to get a new job and POSSABLY avoid the visa run by just adding your new place of employment to your current visa and then canceling your old one. |

I'm trying to figure out how your situation is any worse than anywhere else.
Freezing flat. Turn up the heat.
Freezing classroom. Wlecome to Korea.
No resources. Standard.
No english. That's why you're there.
Thwarted? How?
I dont' see anything wrong except that you want to be in a big party city. Suck it up. Finish your contract and THEN move to the big city. By then you will have saved up enough money to aford a K girlfriend for a few months.... |

How about lecturing you on how you should teach kids with very low English abilities? Dave's has a great section on teaching resources, you know, and if you need help, we're more than happy to give you a hand with advice or whatnot. |

Um, why not demand that the contract be adhered to? What are they gonna do, fire you? Doesn't sound like that would be too big of a problem.
You've never given up on anything? Really? Your hardship hardly sounds unique or adverse. Me thinks you may be a born quitter if you give up that easy. Just make some demands. Books would be nice. |

There's a point here. Politely insist your contract needs to be adhered to. |

Of which proverb do you refer? I missed the "slap in the head" proverb. |

My school made me teach until 10.30pm in my first 6 months. It was killing me. Another Hagwon owner (Korean) told me it is illegal to teach past 10pm. Mr Lee said that if my school insisted, I should tell them that "the Education Office will be dropping by for an inspection".
Mr Lee gave good advice. The school VERY RELUCTANTLY dropped all classes after 10pm (for me - not the K teachers). And yes, I did have to point out that it is illegal, and that the school knew this because they 'half-close' the front door after 10pm (to make it look like the school is just about to close for kids 'just finishing up homework etc'). Actually, my school teaches till 12.30pm! |
