Three of my all-time fave songs of all-time are sung by ladies.....
in no particular order:
Cher - Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves
Nancy Sinatra - These boots are made for walkin'
Mike Oldfield (sung by Maggie Reilly) - Moonlight Shadow
The above are classic and bad.......ass!
I want more please! |

One of those "I'm not a fan, but [x] is outstanding" instances. |

I see people are taking the "classic" requirement of the thread title rather liberally... |

Band of Gold by Freda Payne.
Doesn't get more classic, or classy, than that. |

Considering the first set of nominations included Cher, any reasonable notion of 'classic' went out the window immediately...
Betty Carter - This Lonely House
Nina Simone - PusherMan, Funkier than a Mosquito's Tweeter
Sinead O'Conner - The Lion and The Cobra album. |

What a great contribution to this thread you've made.
My songs fit my definition of classic, and that's all that matters to me. |

as far as classic stuff go
Crazy - Patsy Cline
At Last - Etta James
Take a piece of my heart - Janis Joplin
for more modern stuff, i'd go with songs by
Stars (one more night),
Broken Social Scene (anthem for a 17 year old girl)
Feist - let it die (really beautiful song)
anything by neko case, metric, tracy chapman, tristan prettyman, ani defranco or tori amos.
I just discovered this girl from Nashville, Denitia Odigie. I saw her play during pop montreal and she was one of hte highlights of the festival.

I don't believe women should be allowed to sing!
Their place is in the house busting their husbands' balls and making the lives of their significant others miserable.
That's why God put these vixens on the planet in the first place.
They are like the Eagle who eats the liver of Prometheus for all of eternity.
Women rule the Earth. Their time is much too valuable for singing. |
