Dell laptop
Sony Dvd Writer
I first noticed the problem when a vcd wouldn't play. Dvd's play fine, however, legit data cd's and burnt data cd's cannot be read. The drive won't burn anything. Again, Dvd's play fine.
I re-inistalled drivers, updated drivers...didn't change anything.
-confused
-laptop is less than a year old...Dell has been useless in helping with getting it done under warranty. Totally don't know if I can even get anything done under warranty in Korea.\\

Hello there and welcome to the Tech. Forum,
Depending on what program you used and how the cd was closed (or DVD), you may not be able to read it on a standard drive. For example, some programs require the same program on another computer to open or read the file. Also, if you leave the cd or DVD "open" at the end of the burn process (again, depending on the program you use), then the cd/dvd will be unreadable (especially when using HP products). My suggestion would be to re-burn the CD or movie.
hope this helps,
Ralph |

I'll check the model number after work.
Cubanlord:
It actually won't burn anything. It won't read legit cd's either. For example, the install cd for my gamepad....the drive just sits spinning and shows as "empty" when I go into my computer. Same goes for all of my other legit cd's...photoshop, driver cd's, windows xp, games etc. |

Wow. I didn't know that. In that case, I would say your drive has quit working on you. You'll have to replace it. I'm sorry about your luck. |

Listen, this really sounds like a firmware problem. Wait until you can Google the model number + "firmware download" and see what you get. It's silly to make conclusions before one has completely exhausted all possibilites. |

DVD's and CD's are read by different lasers (or different frequencies of the laser...can't remember which is which). One may not be operational hence why the dvd's are playing fine. Remember, writing and reading of different types of discs all occur at different "burns". One may have screwed up.
This happened to my DVD burner. It would read dvd's, write cd's, and read cd's fine. However, when it came to writing dvd's, it wouldn't. I tried several types of software (I think i even made a post on here about it) and nothing worked (no firmware or program could fix it). Upon installing a new dvd writer, everything was just fine.
Good luck with it. Try what Demo is recommending because if it isn't the firmware and you have tried other programs, then it is definitely the drive. |

Agreed. Take out the drive and find out the manufacturer and model number and do a search on the internet. That's what I did for my new notebook DVD writer. I think Dell uses LG drives if I'm not wrong. |

I agree that it is silly to assume things before all possibilities have been exhausted, however the drive worked just fine before. For his sake, I REALLY hope it is only the firmware and nothing else. Please let us know the final outcome! |

My friend said I should take it out and give it a good clean. I have no idea how to remove a drive from a laptop though. |

wow. for real? can you remove the drive the reinstall it? I know you said it may be difficult, but, you should try to by looking up the manual online. Go to sony.com and look up the manual. It'll show you how to remove the bay.
hmmm....do me a favor, right click on my computer and go to properties. go to hardware then click on device manager. under dvd/cdrom drives, what does it say?
is there an X there? |
