Can't get "older" (pre xp, 2000, whatever) windows/word hangul files to open correctly in Appleworks 6.0 on my MAC (system X, e-mac g4). I can type hangul fine in works on my mac, but I can't figure out how to get documents or attachments Koreans send me to open as anything more than: ?????????? :evil:Tried text-edit and get a few different symbols and characters but no real hangul.
Someone suggested nisus, but I was reading that Xpress wasn't working good with hangul (??) Anway, I've heard that Appleworks was ok, so I'm assuming the problem is operator error.
Anybody been there, done that? Appreciate the help.

Sorry, I have no helpful advice for you but your thread topic subject line has triggered a deeply-seated need to rant about HOW MUCH I #$@&ING HATE WP! MIKE COPLAND AND THE OTHER COREL EXECUTIVES SHOULD BE PUT AGAINST THE WALL - SANS BLINDFOLDS AND LAST SMOKES, MIND YOU- FOR ALLOWING WORDPERFECT TO DEVOLVE INTO THE BUGGY AND NEAR USELESS PIECE OF CRAP IT HAS BECOME!!!
This rant is naturally followed by a rant on how MY OFFICE REFUSES TO SPEND MONEY ON BUYING A REASONABLE AND RELIABLE OFFICE SUITE, LEAVING ME TO STRUGGLE WITH WP AND ALL ITS 'CRAPPY-TUDE' AND DRIVING ME TO POUND MY HEAD AGAINST MY MONITOR UNTIL BLOOD APPEARS ON THE SCREEN [AS-I-AM-DOING-AT-THIS-VERY-SECOND]! FUNNY HOW THEY'LL PUT ME IN A $500 CHAIR AND GIVE ME A NICE P4 PC YET REFUSE TO BUY ANY GOOD SOFTWARE FOR IT!!!!!
Um, I think my rant is done, and I feel much better now [but I still hate WP with a passion that burns].
P.S. I hope you can find someone to help you out with your Mac/Hangul/WP problem. |

I am writing on an iMac (OS 9.1) and would love to know this answer to this question as well. I haven't figured out how to view Korean characters or write them on this machine. Pass on the info if you get it. I've tried to figure it out before but to no avail. |

I'll ask around & see what I can come up with.

Pre-system X should require the Korean kit..or whatever it's called. I got some helpful info at: http://hometown.aol.com/tg3907/mlingos9.html
UW has a page with a bunch of links/info on CJK computer issues...most of it regarding pre-X, maybe: depts.washington.edu/eacenter/outreach.htm or depts.washington.edu/eacenter/cjk
I'm still fighting system X for reading windows word/wp-generated hangul text in appleworks...I've got works version 6.2.4 It's a bummer because there's a pretty cool on-line course at iic.edu (in San Francisco) (SAT II prep class w/test) but I'm not having much luck. (I'm not in Korea right now and it looked like a fun way to brush up on Korean) Lots of other issues too: Mac doesn't like the mms sound files and my connection is too slow apparently to load an embedded player correctly, anyway I can't listen to the listening comp questions and because of the problem reading the text files I can't read the instructor's e-mail attachments. Suffice it to say, I'm feeling kinda stoopid. |

i use os-x (10.2.6) but i have os-9.2 on another partition. both of them allow me to type in hangeul with no problems.
all of the foreign language kits are included in the installation disks for both os-9.2 and os-x.
i suggest yu run your original installation again and choose the option to install the appropriate language kit. if yu haven't got it then pm me, i may be able to help.
as for the HWP - it is a crock. i never use it. i have tried to open its files with very little success. |

The problem isn't the Hangul, it's Appleworks. It has a lot of problems with WordXP documents. The only solutions I know of involve buying new software. Office v.X and Think Office are both supposed to handle WordXP files much better than Appleworks.
Apple hasn't updated the document conversion data for Appleworks in quite some time. I'm hoping this will be addressed this Fall when OSX 10.3 ships. |

Thanks for the info. I feel vindicated, it's my software that's stupid! |
