|
|
I don't have a laptop now (nor can I really afford one at the moment), so my thought was to bring my drive in an external closure and then buy a laptop or desktop in Korea after a paycheck or two comes in.
My question is: would I be able to plug in my external HD in a PC Baang in the interim?
Would I also be able to plug in my (firewire) iPod so I can refresh it with new music?
Or is this all pushing digital nomad-ism too far in the ROK? |

I have a USB HDD that is no probs in a PC room. Firewire? Not sure about much support for it. If you can access the back panel of the computer, you may find the port. |

Glad to hear this works for at least one person; my worry was that the computers would be too locked-down software-wise to do something like this.
If firewire (for my older ipod) isn't common, may be that'd be a good reason to get a new one.
Then again, maybe I should earn my won before I think of ways to spend it...

No. I had to use a PC room after moving to Seoul a few months ago. Had no net access for a week or so and had to do some grad school related work. |

Some are quasi-locked down but if you have any know-how its easy to get around. Dunno if every PC bang will have firewire though. |

A USB connected external HDD is NO problem in MOST (99%) PC-bangs. There are PC-bangs on every corner and a few more in-between so if you do manage to find one that does not allow you to plug in, simply move downstairs to the next one.
MAKE sure that if you are using a north American external case for your HDD that it has a SWITCHABLE power supply and be sure to switch it to 240v or you will burn it (and probably your HDD as well) out. Cases can be bought here for cheap if you need one.
Download your face off.
I don't think I have ever seen a place with systems that would support firewire. |

Oh yeah!
The thought did occur to me that when moving to one of the most wired (the most wired?) nations on the planet, some spare HD space might be a good idea.
Oh boy, I can not wait to get off this lame minimum-DSL--so-called-broadband they have out here in dairy land. 'course, now I've jinxed myself and will only find good offers in the Korean sticks. |

I use my mp3 player to download stuff from PC bangs, using a USB drive would not be a problem.
And as ttompatz said, firewire is pretty rare on PCs unless you come across a mac or use some adapter of some kind. |
