Hi, I was wondering if you pronounce these 2 words exactly the same. I am talking about close, as in not open, not as in near. I think I pronounce them the same way, what about you?

Me three. My phonics book notes that both are acceptable. To Koreans with their phonetically perfect alphabet, however, understanding that there are two ways of pronuncing words like 'neither' can be a little difficult.

If I'm speaking very slowly I'll say the slightest hint of the th but usually I just say close like close the door.

Yesterday I was explaining to the math teacher that clothing was the mass form of clothes. I'm not sure I understand it now that I think about it.

Sometimes I will point out that Americans will slur things and demonstrate some variations they will hear. I know it confused me when Germans would slowly demonstrate some word or phrase and then they wouldn't actually say it that way when speaking normally.

i put in a hint of a th. (unless i've been drinking and the Virginia comes out... then there's no th whatsoever.) but if my students are having real problems with it (and most do), i'll tell them it's acceptable to pronounce it like 'close'. otherwise i get a lot of 'clo-thes', which bugs the crap outta me.

I would never pronounce the "th," it sounds like you have a speech impediment.

For those of you who do pronounce the 'th', is it a 2 syllable word for you? Pronouncing the 'th' using 1 syllable is almost impossible for me.
