Woman, 92, Killed In Shootout With Police
POSTED: 12:15 a.m. EST, November 22, 2006

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A 92-year-old woman was shot to death Tuesday after she fired at three narcotics officers trying to serve a warrant at her house, officials said.

Neighbors and relatives said it must have been a case of mistaken identity. Police said they had the right address.

Police said the woman, identified as Kathryn Johnson, was the only person home at the time, and had lived there for about 17 years.

As the plainclothes Atlanta police officers approached the house about 7 p.m., a woman inside started shooting, striking each of them, said Officer Joe Cobb, a police spokesman.

Assistant Chief Alan Dreher said the officers had a legal warrant and "knocked and announced" before they forced open the door. He said they were justified in returning fire when they were fired upon.

One was hit in the arm, another in a thigh and the third in a shoulder. The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment, and all three were conscious and alert, police said.

Sarah Dozier, identified as a niece of the woman, told WAGA-TV that there were never any "drugs" at the house.

"My aunt was in good health. I'm sure she panicked when they kicked that door down," Dozier said.

"There was no reason they had to go in there and shoot her down like a dog."

Case of bad aiming by Police.

Granny was a better shot. She was only aiming at non-lethal parts of body like leg, arm, and shoulder.

Hurray for granny for not choosing to kill those cops, but really sorry for the granny. Crying or Very sad

The cops should have known better than to mess with granny.

I'm sure granny's relatives will get huge financial settlement.

Rest in peace granny. Crying or Very sad

I don't even know what to say to this. You shoot a gun at a cop and you will be fired upon. This is a pathetic article even for you IGTG. What the hell is a 92 year old woman doing with a gun, knowing how to use it and firing immediately (ie right at hand) at people anyway???

In the South, many, many people have guns in the house. It is quite common. I am sure she learned how to use a weapon a long time ago.
I do have a hard time believing a 92 year old woman was involved with drugs, but it is possible the police were right, but the police do make mistakes.

Talking about guns in the South. I am from the South and I personally own 5 guns. I have 3 handguns and 2 rifles.

And many of my friends and neighbors own guns like me. We even carry guns in our cars and trucks. We use gun racks to hang our rifles inside the truck.

I'm sure that granny also owned several guns at her disposal. I think she's an expert marksman for hitting all three cops at one time (like Annie Oakley).

I definately think that cops have made serious mistake in this case. The three cops who got shot up probably learned a hard lesson to never mess with 92 year-old granny.

They were in plain clothes and they forced open the door - sure they knocked and announced before that but what if she didn't hear them? 92 year olds don't have the best hearing. Looks to me like she thought they were 3 burglars coming to rob her and panicked, like her niece said.

Either that or she was a 92 year old druglord grandmother. Possible I suppose.

Imagine if they had been burglars: she'd be a national hero.

Manny watsup, seriously is this post even on topic.

The guy posted an article no opinion just an article and you wack him.

Geez, at least put some background into your reasoning for the wack.

Back on topic, I think cops make mistakes. In this case they were compeled to fire back. However the events leading up to the shootin will probably show a cascade of misadventure on the part of the police.
