|

I'm a little perplexed. I want a big-screen (50+inch) TV but I can't decide if I should go "Full-HD" or just "HD-Compatible". Full HD, from what I've learned, supports 1080p resolution, while "HD-comp." is 720p.
I've googled this and have found varying viewpoints, but I'd like to hear the opinion of my fellow Korea Tech board guys/gals.
Should I spend 2-3 times more for a full-HD TV or get a really good deal on an older model 720p television?
Price: FullHD - ~5,000,000
Price: HD-comp- ~1,800,000 |

Without looking at specs or whatever, I'd go for the cheaper one simply because the prices on the expensive ones are going to keep dropping. A few years with the comp and then you decide you're ready for full HD it'll be a lot cheaper...
Just my uninformed 2 cents... I'm going through a similar thing but not over full vs comp but LCD vs plasma vs projector. |

Thanks for your help. You'll find an even bigger price discrepancy between Full HD and HD comp projectors. Just ridiculous for a few more pixels, but that's top of the line tech for you.
You make a good point about buying comp now and hd later, but it's going to be really, really hard to convince the wife to get a new TV (even 3 years from now) if we are sitting back watching a perfectly nice 56 incher in 720p! LOL...
but I guess I could just suck it up and wait a year or two for the full-HD to come down in price. |

That depends on whether you want the latest technology now or later.
Personally even 5,000,000 is a bit too much for me so I'd wait. |

Optoma H27 DLPHome Theatre System with 92" screen and ceiling mount
4 to 10 business days, wooo hoo! |

Good choice. My projector is one of the best purchases I've ever made, bar none.
In answer to the OP, go with the cheaper one. |

I've been using an infocus SVGA for the past two years- rec room is all set up with surround sound, new sofas, but the projector finally crapped out on me and given the price I got it for (free) I opted to buy a new one rather than replace the bulb. The wall was fine but I expect to see much better results now with a screen and better DLP technology. It was a close call though, the wife had been pushing for a 42" plasma...
Now I know where I'll be for the superbowl! |

It arrives today!
And upgrading the o/s on the laptop I'm hooking it to (from 2Kpro to XPpro) has done wonders for the quality of picture from pcmcia tuner card (don't know why, but great news)! |

That's cool. TV on my projector doesn't look all that hot, but I don't think it's due to the projector, rather, my theory is that my Skylife box just produces a crap signal. It's currently hooked up via S-video, which I would consider just slightly passable. I've also tried component hook-ups and didn't see any noticeable improvement. So, I thought the problem might be the converter in the PJ, so I ran a video-in to my computer and checked the quality on my monitor with my Radeon doing the conversion. The picture is still basically crap. There's something up with the Skylife box. It sucks, but outside of things like the World Cup, I'm rarely tempted to watch tv on the PJ anyway. |
