I've been plying my trade here in Ulsan for many a year, thinking I was making pretty good coin (3-5 million a month) but was floored when I met a teacher from Seoul who told me he takes home over 7 million/month FROM hogwans (Kungnam-sp?). Is this accurate?

The natural South Korean salary comparison would be to look at what the chaebol companies currently pay (Samsung, Hyundai etc).

As far as I can tell, it is currently something like this:

entry level chaebol employee: 2.0 mil
daeri supervisors: 2.0 - 3.0 mil
gwajang supervisors: 3.0 - 4.5 mil
bujang managers: 4.5 - 6.0 mil
isa executives: 6 mil + bonuses and allowances (in excess of 25%)

So the concept of a hagwon instructor making 7 million a month or 80 million a year - does seem a little far fetched, unless he could specifically name the hagwon and the nature of his employment. One would assume he would have to be doing a lot of privates on the side.

I've read that the most experienced Korean primary school teachers with 35+ years experience (on the top salary rate) are indeed paid over 60 million won a year (5 million per month). But I guess such cases would be rare.

3-5 million a month is good if you're not miserable from working too much.

That's just pure BS. Think about it.
