Hello all.
I have a camp tomorrow morning at 8am. My lesson plans were set for the day, and I just received an email asking me to change a plan to "Schedules".

I'm thinking to discuss...
-purpose of a schedule as a time management tool.
-elements of a schedule. ie; structure, time, activity, location, people.
-difference between a weekend and weekday schedule.

for an activity, I was thinking of having the studetns draw their own schedules. Doens't have to be them. In fact, I was thinking of encouraging them to make up a person, maybe an actor, a doctor, a farmer.....something like that, and we could discuss the differences in them....

Aaaaaaggghhhhh, I don't know. These are 1st year middle school kids. Their level is pretty low.

I dont want to just talk at them. I want them to talk to me.

Can anybody help with discussion points or topics? Has anybody done this lesson plan before?



I will not have access to electronic materials or anything, just a printer and i have my computer at home to type stuff up.

Sounds like you've got a handle on it...could be fun! You might want to go over some vocab and questions first: "Are you free on X day at X time?" "Sorry, I'm not...how about X day at X time?"

If I remember right, there is an activity in the first level (yellow, spiral bound) conversation game book (sorry, can't think of the name of it right now!) that has to do with schedules.


You also could teach "I'm sorry, I'm not free at that time", or "I'm sorry, I have another appointment". Teach them that "I have a promise" is NOT correct!!

Yeah, the title is sooooo newbie whiner. Wait....I AM a newbie....lol.

Usually at that level they don't know how to tell time properly, i.e. "8 hour", "5 and a half" or "17 hour" in Konglish, etc. Review telling time.

Teach them to ask time questions: "When...", "What's happening", "How long...", etc. You could even bring in your own weekday schedule on a big sheet of paper to use for practice.

Bring in a grid on a sheet of paper and have them design their own personal schedules: "get up", "get dressed", etc.

On the same grid, put them in partners/groups and have them design several types of schedules, example TV Listings where they design their own station format. Have them practice the questions with their work.

Yeah, that's valid, except we already did as a regular lesson plan, "clock time", and "time expressions" (separate plans). This school I see once a week, so I wasn't coming in blind. When I randomly ask, "what time is it, I get, "two thirty", and "a half past two". A couple of kids can even give me the class start time (for example) as, "fourteen hundred hours". If they hadn't had the primer, then I would be teaching WAY beyond their level. We did do a time and time expression review at the beginning and they were pretty solid.
