el Gordo - is your default position the Hagwon is always right? I never suggested satyagraha was my modus operandi. Do you get any exercise other than jumping to conclusions?

How did you "jump to the conclusion" that I was saying the acadamy was always right? I just noted that in your first post you went to great lengths to paint yourself as doing nothing combative in the face of unending yelling from the director. Very much a "look at me, I'm a victim! I did nothing wrong nor did I do anything to escalate the situtation!"

Then after you think you've got our sympathy, you try and up it to hero status by saying how great it was you went toe to toe in the yelling contest, directly contradicting what you said at first.

Will you be signing autographs at a PC room when you do your next posting? Maybe you can tell us how you fought unending street gangs trying to recruit your students. Or maybe a story about how you single-handidly pushed back a secret North Korean invasion and now we should host a dinner in your honour.

Get back to me when you decide to post the full version of what happened.

Gord....please do us all a favor and get something resembling a clue. Clearly Catalina is the injured party here. Why must you always play devil's advocate regardless of the absence of logic in your position?

I can't see how "You're fired...leave!" is just a warning to you. I hope you will not stay with this hagwan. You can probably get your visa canceled and take a nice trip somewhere, and look for another job here, if you really want to. (Wouldn't blame you if you didn't!!) Shocked Not all hagwan directors are like that harpy...just do a lot of research next time and hopefully things will come out right in the end.

I feel that Gord had a point with his original posting. Catalina could have made it more clear that she yelled at her boss in her original posting. Was Catalina a victim? Yes. But she may not have handled the situation as well as she could have. Also its improtant to have devil advocates even if it is a thankless task.

Personally I find it funny that the boss changed her mind and wants Catalina back and came up the BS excuse that it was just a warning. What an idiot. Can't even come out and admit that she made a mistake. Just tries to cover it up by saying it was just a warning.

Arrow NEWS FLASH

As of today, five of the six 'existing' teachers at the hagwon are leaving, and the last is planning on giving her notice. We have great students, good curriculum and a reasonably flea-free place to work. It tells me that the social/managerial aspects are out of whack. I'm tired of trying to compensate for insanity in the workplace (now that i'm leaving) and I'm obviously not the only one. It doesn't feel good to try to fly below the radar everyday to avoid confrontation with the dictatorship. So when it lands on your lap, how is one supposed to react? While I can appreciate "maybe she could have handled it better" comments I think it states the obvious (rhetoric) and is sometimes better left unsaid. We, humans, do not always act to our potential, especially under duress, as clearly shown on this thread.

Gordo- How is it OK for you to personally attack posters and then berate others for the same behaviour towards you? If this is how you behave as a teacher I have empathy for your students-- something you evidently lack. I also find it sad that someone would be happy being thought of as a troll.

Inside is a beautiful flower (this could be you) Wink

I don't know about the rest of you but I kind of like the idea that the entire teaching staff of a school is deciding to teach because of incredably bad management. You reap what you sow. I hope that their aren't any replacements lined up.

So because she claims she's the injured party, that gives her a free ticket to sit back and make up stories? All I did was point out that she was revising her story to fit the mood.

Why hate the messenger that pointed out she was being less than wholely truthful?

What attack? You may have read this already, but all I did was point out that she was revising her story to fit the mood.

So when someone wrongs me, can I come onto this forum and make up stories too? Will I have your undying support and your pledge to attack anyone to points out the obvious contradictions in my stories? Will you answer the call to service?

gord can't you ever give people a break? These people have posted before how their hogwon shafted them and now has fired one of them and all you can do is berate them.

Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen and you should know better than that, you've been here long enough.

if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Catalina - what is the name of your school?

Make sure everyone knows the name of your school and where it is.

Come to Taiwan. Cheap start up costs. Great weather in Winter.

The Taiwanese, by FAR, are much friendlier than either the Koreans or Japanese.

Earnings are on par with Korea as well as taxes.

Sh*t loads of work in Taipei, albeit with Kids.

Taiwanese kids are much easier to work with than Korean kids as well.

Sorry to hear about your situation. It sounds to me like you have done the right thing. If you had stayed, things would only get worse. The boss would see you as weak and thus push even further.

As for logic, don't expect much of what your boss does to make much sense. To him (or her) saving face is all the logic he needs. I have been through the scenario before, been fired, then called back because they couldn't find a replacement. Then after I finished my contract, they asked me if I wanted to return. Laughing Who were they trying to kid?

Gord, Gord, Gord...... did your mother beat you as a child, or just later?

Cheers

Oh come on Gord - I need advice here - not you playing self-apointed Devil's advocate.

Quickly, let's do a little autopsy here for the sake of the viewing audience. Try to restrain yourself from posting until you read my response and walk away from your computer for a while. Your first reaction might not be the best.

You forgot to mention this part in your first posting when you were trying to suggest you were Ghandi.

Except when I said "it was a shouting match" and "I stood my ground". Did you forget to read that part - or was it an omission of convenience for the sake of your argument? And, while I thank you greatly for the compliment, I never suggested that I was Ghandi.

GORD - Corporal wrote that, not me. Come on Gord - put a little effort in here - at least try to quote the correct source..

Why are you so angry with this thread?

I don't see your grounds for such a strong reaction, really an over-reaction. Is the stuff about the street gangs and the North Koreans an attempt at humour? Where did you get all that? It reads like you are having a one-sided argument in your head. Always a dangerous habit - especially when you post.

Frankly, I was surprised and hurt at your vitriolic reactions. Your reponses are really out of line with my postings. Are your working too much? Is it time for a vacation? Too much time in Korea? Have your turned into the ugly foreigner?

Perhaps I have touched a nerve of some sort. Maybe you are having a flashback to a woman named Catalina who once lied to you. Now, all of the Catalinas of the world must pay the price for her actions. Is that what's happening here?

Come on Gord - you can tell me - or even tell all of us. I have been very fortunate to have really positive and supportive reponses to my posts on this board. For the most part people in this community are really friendly and they do seek to help.

Really - you will feel much better after getting it all off your chest.....

Love,

Catalina

I agree with what they said. You go to extremes here. You now accuse Catalina of dramatics and lying?

I read her post and didnt get that impression? Im wondering how you did.

Also that comment about leading a charge through the streets. How stupid of you to say that.

Your just saying stuff to get a reaction and I have noticed this in other threads. Please just shut up.

Also dont pull that im just being objective crap. There is no one backing you up here, so we dont have a jaded point of view on the matter.

Catalina good luck with future endeavours. By all standards I have heard of Hagwon experiences. Mines is soooooooooo boring. Razz

Gord likes to think he has the inside edge on how to deal with Koreans, and that we are all raving imperialists with no sensitivities to handle koreans properly. He's trying to stick up for his race, being as he is, a Gyopo. What he doesn't realise is that koreans have to learn how to treat foreigners as well: its a two -way street.
