So, he's one guy putting a face to the hundred thousand parents dealing with a handicapped child? Good for him, but it's the poor/low/middle-class parents with little support who deal with their handicapped child that deserve our praise and admiration more!

I'm not sure if you read about him Ajuma. If not, check out google for the story. I agree that parents with handicapped children are heroes. What the father has done for his son in the case of the Hoyt's is just so amazing.

Have you noticed how you rarely if ever see handicapped people in Korea?

Yes, have hardly seen any. Must be the pure blood.

One thing I have noticed is quite a few younger-looking men doing the herky-jerky walk while on crutches (don't know how else to describe it). My guess is they were former delivery guys who weren't wearing helmets, who got on the wrong-side of a streetlight.

Coincidence? I think not.

Indeed, I was going to ask (in a new post) about the handicapped - physically or mentally, persons in Korea.

It is my understanding that this is a society focussed on family groups and even more, appearances, so do they hide anyone not presentable?

A korean woman (most of the ones I know at work) who gets married at age 31 or higher is going to have a much higher chance of giving birth to children with developmental problems.. no?

But similar to this effort from Rick Hoyt for his child will what my cousin has to get prepared for if her new-born child survives outside the ICU.

Handicapped people are a social dilema in Korea, i even believe some people do not regard them as people, more as animals in Korea.

I said some, not all okay.

Now, i am aware where i live that people are not ashamed of walking around with their handicapped children, and i really would like to to tell them that i think these people are rebels in a society like Korea. But that would only make things worse wouldn't it.

Handicapped people really need way more support everywhere in the world, these people did not do anything to be born like that. Unlike people who got into an accident (sometimes).

Anyways, things tend to chance and while Korea is slowly becoming more affluent, they might consider sacrificing some resources to take better care of their handicaps, i hope.

I saw three foreigners in wheelchairs once near Olympic Park in Seoul. That was the only time I've seen that in Korea.

I live in Yongin, and I've worked in Special Education classrooms in Korea. I see people with handicaps all the time, both young and old. There's a kid with Down Syndrome in my neighbourhood, and a girl with some pervasive development disorder down the street.

Gasp! I just realized... maybe there's something in the water! Shocked
