I've been around Korea quite a lot, but never to Chuncheon. We'll be visiting for the first time this month and based on the few reports I've gotten it seems like a nice place. From what I've heard it seems like a mid-sized town with a few universities and (man-made) lakes, clean air and good restaurants. Any feedback on life there? What should I do while there? A lakeside walk or boat ride? Where's the best dakgalbi in town? I heard there's a five-day market near there - is that right? How about the environs? I saw the iccn.co.kr website but are there any other useful sites to visit?

You should go see the dam- it's enormous. You can take a boat ride, too. Dalk kalbi is downtown. The one time I went to Chuncheon, we just decided to go to the busiest restaurant. Then again, most of the dalk kalbi restaurants were busy. You can always look for awards on the wall, or magazine write-ups that are being displayed near the door...

Dakalbi street is in the Myeong-dong in Chuncheon (yes, same name as in Seoul). There are many there - select the busy one
Also, makgooksu (spicy colder noodles) were made in Chucheon originally so you should try that.

Visit the dam and you can take a small cruise ship for a boat ride. For other things a car would be necessary. There is a pretty good tourist map in tourist information booth so be sure to get it.

Also, if you have time you can go to Nami island which is a man made island on the man made lake that is a famous getaway spot for people during summer months and it is a place where Winter sonata soap opera was made (so many japanese tourists go there for that reason). Nice place to rent a cabin on the lake and do BBQ. But, you need to take a small boat and walk around so consider 4-5 hours minimum if you have time.

Went to chuncheon during Chusok. IT was beautiful. I recommend staying at the Biophilla Hotel. (02-3211-4114) Its downtown and around the corner are the duk kalbi restaurants. 40,000w per night. Ask someone for city bus that takes you to the Dam. Beats paying a taxi. I was surprised at the friendliness of the people and their knowledge of English. I think place is a lot better during warmer weather though.
