Yes.

You are, if flying economy class, limited to 2 bags of checked luggage and 1 carry on.

The weight limits vary. Some airlines allow a maximum of 50 lbs per bag. some are 70 per bag and some are 50lbs total IF you are flying to/from North America (on an international flight). Domestic limits are much lower.

The limits are very MUCH lower if you are flying to/from other destinations. Typically 20 kg total for checked luggage and 7kg for your 1 piece of carry-on..

Check with your airline or their website for luggage limits.

I came here with 1 carry-one bag. Really, what all do you need to bring other than a years supply of clothes and toiletries? Toss in some spices for home cooking (these are really light) and a few bags of stickers and photos.

2nd to that, how much to you think you can carry? 2 bags of 70 lbs each + a carry-on of 15 lbs is a lot of weight.

3rd, they will let you bring more, you just have to pay excess baggage charges for it. You can expect about $200-300 or so per bag from the states.

4th and probably just as important. You will likely be moving into an apartment that is about 15 feet wide and 15 feet deep. About the same size as a smallish bedroom back home.

Your closet will be about 3 feet wide and have perhaps one or two drawers in it. Where will you put the extra stuff you think you need to bring?

Shocked

Seriously?? Please excuse me if you are in earnest, but thinking that you can take 4 bags on a plane seems a bit fluff-headed a la Legally Blonde.

I have been travelling my entire life due the family being all over the bloody place and can recall a time when air travel was a pleasure and not a necessary evil. Even in the blessed 90's you could only have two bags and they had to be under a certain weight (though, we mosty travelled from europe to north america or africa).

They can even regulate the size of your bag now. Horrid isn't it? I can understand the urge to pack 4 bags but it really, really is not worth it as there is simly no place to put it all. I agonize everytime I pack because of this. I would suggest you pack two bags, get as large a carryon as you can and mail yourself a few things that did not fit. You could always pack a box of summer things in advance and ask your family or a friend to send it to you when summer arrives?

Good Luck!

I know that it does sound totally "blond" but I have never traveled outside the country and certainly nowhere that I planned on living for a year. Can you tell me the size of the largest check-in that I can have? I have one 28". If I have 2 of those plus a carry-on, would that work?

Different airlines have different rules. What airline are you flying on?

Very Happy I am into heavy preplanning!!! I don't leave until January. I'm not sure of the airlines but it will probably be Northwest.

Trinity - you're a woman after my own heart. Very Happy A heavy pre-planner is a really good way to put it. I can never go anywhere without knowing as much as I can before hand and having sevreal contingency plans. (oddy enough, some people find this irritating. Wink )

I had one 26" suitcase and one that was 28" but collapsible, filled 'em as much as I could and they always do the trick. Having shifted continents more than a handful of times for long stays - don't worry about no having enough. You can always find a way to make do and purchase on the local economy. Korea is not the 3rd world - loads of things there to discover. However, there are quite a few useful threads about what you might want to bring with you that might prove a bit more difficult to find. Deodorant comes to mind.

Just check around with the airlines that you might travel or ring a travel agency, they usually have some good information.

I seem to overpack as well. I've taken 2 suitcases (checked in), and carried on a laptop pack, a briefcase and 3 lightweight "suit" garment bags (plus a couple of duty free bags). They usually are worried more about the weight than the number of bags you're carrying.

Badgie - I think a lot of it has to do with the excitement of all of this. I just bought a 4 piece luggage set today. I was so proud of it. I even had two of them packed when I thought I would come on here and see if I could bring more than 4 Laughing . Well!! I guess those 4 pieces will be returned tomorrow for 2 of the largest I can find. Thank God for Dave's and you guys!!
