Well, I have been trying to get decent airfare to somewhere tropical over Christmas, but that is not going to happen. So, I found I can go to Taiwan for less then 400 dollars, but is there anything there to see and do for a week? Would it be possible to catch a decent flight from there, to Thailand or Singapore for a decent price? I really don't want to stay here. Thanks.

Check out the other thread on this.

Try an airline like EVA, which flies through Taipei and would let you have a day stopover on the way to somewhere fun. But a week in Taipei would be hellaciously boring and a little cold right now. I'd rather stay in Korea.

A week is probably perfect for visiting Taiwan, you can travel from north to south in 8-9 hours by bus. The east coast with Taroko is a must see. Taipei is a very interesting city with great nightlife, shopping and food. Kenting in the south for the beach (though it is by no mean great compared to elsewhere in Asia). Kaohsiung while heavily polluted and somewhat downplyed by the lonley planet, is a fun city with decent nightlife. Tainan has great temples and a lot of history to see. Yushan is the biggest mountain in Northeast asia if you are into mountains and climbing. And lastly some of the smaller towns are also pretty cool, Lugang being my favorite.

Cheers,

Dem

I wouldn't recommend Taiwan to anyone. I went there at Chu-sok and found it to be a ugly, run-down version of Korea with all the same expensive prices. There are no sidewalks.
Even the resort Ken Ting was dirty and boring and the beaches were covered in garbage and ants.

I highly recommend the Philipines instead. It is just about the same distance as Taiwan but everything is very cheap: buses, boats, food and hotels so you'll end of paying less overall. Also, most people speak fluent English.

It is also much more beautiful than Taiwan and more fun and interesting.
