Can anyone suggest a good virus checker and/or anti-spyware software as my computer is acting up after only a week of getting it. I currently use Avast but I'm not overly confident in its ability. |

I've been using AVG for a year now and have had no problems with it. Norton is good, but it is bloatware. While it will catch the viruses it will also slow your computer down. |

I found the opposite -- Avast slowed down my PC drastically, while Norton runs without any problems. $50 well spent, for me. |

After doing some research, it looks like NOD32 is recommended. Anyone else use this virus checker? |

As much as it pains me to help a blue nose, here goes. I use Norton Anti Virus (can be downloaded for free from various torrent sites) as well as skybot (free, which scans for spyware) and Ad-ware SE personal (again free, made by Lavasoft, which scans for adware) Norton acts as the main 'barrier' the other two, much smaller programmes, which you can use to scan your computer periodically, act as a back up.
It's also advisable to change your Internet browser from Internet Explorer ( which is highly susceptible to 'attack'.) The best one is probably Firefox. Again this is free.
PS. savour the start to the season while you can, cos it'll all go t*ts up |

Cheers for the advice. As for the season - don't worry, we'll be up there challenging for honours, without having to lob balls into the box for a 6"7 striker to latch on to |

I've heard / read so many comments / advice as to which is the best anti virus software .............. I have come to the conclusion that they all have their good points and their not so good points. You will find that what one misses another will find.
To put it simply, there is no best program and probably no worst program.
My recommendation is to buy whatever you fancy .... if it has a pretty picture on the packet, get it. If it is cheaper than the others, get it.
Whatever you choose it will be better than not having any protection. |

The bottom-line is don't pay for this type of software.
For anti-virus use AVG Free or Pro (free if you know the right sites)or Avast. Do not pay for Norton or McAfee, these programs use way too much precious system resources.
For anti-spyware, I use Ad-aware Personal, Spybot and A-Squared Free. All of these are free and excellent soft-ware and are regularly updated.
For Firewall use Zone Alarm, this is free and very, very good.
To sum up, there is plenty of excellent freeware out there so don't pay for crap programmes which ruin your computer.
Also Firefox and Opera are the best broswers, Opera does absolutely everything and even downloads torrents directly. |

Kaspersky or NOD32 are the top two right now. |

i use avg free and nod32. i like nod a lot. the gui is unusual and it takes a little getting used to, but it's a good program and doesn't slow down my computer.
i hate nortons and most of the other 'big' antivirus programs because i think they do tend to eat up your computing speeds.
definitely recommend nod32 ... and it's aussie made! |

this summer i had a rootkit virus... after trying many virus checkers, i tried KASPERSKY
it got out the virus and performed admirably. it is free to try for 30 days...
i bought it and am using it now.... it was about $40 US dollars (i think) |
