Seriously, what's up with this practice? As I type, to either side of me, and across from me, three woman teachers at their desks, seem to be wanting to sand their teeth to pebbles. They brush way too hard, for too long (it's been going on a solid 6 minutes). But it's the way they brush their teeth that cracks me up...just sitting or standing there, rarely at a sink until it's time to spit. Few of my male co-workers or male students brush though.
I always ask them if they are going on a date after lunch period or something.
Is brushing more than three times a day standard practice in Korea?
Yes, hygiene is good, but this is more akin to OCD behavior than wanting to stay "clean."
Note to Apologists: This behavior cracks me up, does not make me agry about Korea! |

All of the teachers (male and female) brush their teeth after lunch. You're supposed to brush your teeth three times a day right? Morning, lunch, and before bed.
At my schools teachers and students go to the bathroom to do it, however.
They probably think you're dirty and unclean and they're probably right.

I think migooknom is exactly right and I'm grateful for their efforts to get rid of the kimchi breath. Teaching at home I always kept Frisks to fend off coffee breath. I've taken up the toothbrushing cause, frankly, a mint doesn't cut it when it comes to kimchi. |

If only it did. Kim Chi breath doesn't die that easily. Ever got on a bus in the morning? I'm sure most people have brushed but the smell almost knocks me off my feet.
I've found that drinking milk or eating chocolate sometimes helps to combat it though. |

Yep, that right there is the root of horrible breath in Korea. People just do not floss here. The only Korean people I've met who even know what floss is are those who have lived abroad.
Just imagine being 45 years old and never having flossed even once in your life. There's decades of food buildup that becomes encrusted at the gum and creates a foul smell. No mints or toothbrushes are going to cure that. |

TRUST ME: Never question when Koreans brush their teeth. NEVER. Accept it with joy, and be thankful. |

That's probably because those people brush first then eat breakfast....which doesn't make much sense |

I smoke, so i give a quick brush after every cigarette at school. Quick means 20 seconds. Longer after meals.
(I skeeved out a student once when I leaned over her and she smelled my cig breath. Vowed to never let it happen again.) |
