Will Mel Gibson's `Apocalypto' restore his cinematic stature or doom career?

Quote:
"Apocalypto" arrives in theatres Friday with an incongruous challenge its auteur, Mel Gibson, is both its biggest asset and biggest problem.

Gibson, 50, is coming off two major hits: the phenomenal, US$370 million success of his religious epic, "The Passion of the Christ," and the scandalous, anti-Semitic rant he spewed after a drunk-driving arrest in July.

The question is: which hit will prove more powerful? Will moviegoers turn their backs on him or will they turn out at the box-office?

Mel makes good movies. If this movie tanks, it'll be because it isn't up to snuff.

I haven't heard any early reviews yet, but did see a preview the other day. Bunch of nearly naked guys running around the jungle and someone who looks about to have his heart cut out. Could be cool.

I'm a big fan of the Mayan civilisation so I'll be checking this out.
With the title I'm wondering whether this will be a 2012 thing?

Watching the preview, this movie looks awesome, and I'll be there to see it.

I think the hollywood scandal circuit has had it's time with this piece of gossip, and has already moved onto the naming and shaming of Michael "Kramer" Richards.

Most people have short memories unless it directly affects them. I'd guess everyone not jewish has already forgotten about it.

Name one.

Just so you know, I am one of the discriminating people who realize that Passion sucked the sweaty, bouncing balls of Christ as he tapdanced.

What else?

This looks damn ass class.

And the dialogue is in Yucatec Maya. Does anyone else think that is way coolness?

Even it sucks storywise, it will at least be visually awesome. At least Mel has that going for him (not much else though). From the description, using an entirely ingigenous cast, most of which are not actors, speaking the language which fits the setting, this looks pretty bold for a hollywood film.

If it isn't in English, that really blows. That means there is no point in going to the theatre to see it. Guess I will have to buy the pirated DVD.

Re: English subtitles...

Probably not...I just watched Pan's Labyrinth, and it was spoken Spanish with Korean subtitles.
