Did any of you, after you had signed your contract but before stepping foot on the plane to come to Korea, have MAJOR second thoughts about the whole thing? How did you deal with it? Now that you're in Korea, do you wish that you had listened to those second thoughts?

I'm just about to sign my contract, and I'm having those second thoughts myself. But I think the most important thing to remember is that this is a decision which hopefully you've made for the right reasons, and that doubts are inevitable. But with every major decision there is always going to be some risk. Just think, this is going to be one of the amazing things you're ever going to do - I mean jumping in a completely different country and culture, knowing no one, not speaking the language and being thrown into the minefield of hagwons, is fantastic!

How well you fare when you get to Korea will be determined largely by you and your resolve. You've made a big step deciding to come to Korea, now take the plunge and leap into the most incredible journey of your life!

And if all else fails, then at least you tried. And that's the key to a successful and happy existence.

I agree with vexed.

Second thoughts are natural, and all you can do is review the reasons you made the decision to come here in the first place. If you thought it out carefully and arrived at your decision for reasons that are good for you, then carry on. If you really doubt your reasoning was sound, then maybe you should delay leaving home until you are sure.

I have not regretted my decision, even during the bad times. When things were not going well, I reminded myself that in any adventure story, the hero has to do some suffering. That is part of what makes it exciting. Life isn't about avoiding difficulties. It's about over-coming them.

Good luck with your decision.

Before I came here, I had second thoughts. Then a family friend pointed out "the last time I checked, airplanes were still flying both ways" and with that I went forward with my plans.

If you don't like it, you can always jump on the next plane out of here.

It sounds easy, but there are far too many that stay here rather than go home when things don't flow for them.

Happy travels,
AC

trinity,

i am going to fed-ex all my stuff to the recruiter in the morning. I finally (I think) picked a contract/school I can live with.

I've had second thoughts the whole way, but anything important I've ever done, changed jobs, gotten married, gotten divorced, moved, etc- I've had second, third, and forth thoughts about.

looking back, I've never made a "bad" decision....I've either handled the decisions I've made in a positive nature or a less than positive nature.

The thing that attracted you to take off for a foreign country and work a job you have no experience in will not go away. Chances are if you do not take the step and go, you will regret it. If you g, you probably will never regret it.

Guys, let me ask: is your employer paying for your flight? Do you have enough for a return ticket? Then you really have nothing to worry about, do you? If things go wrong, you can leave.

I was fine until I arrived in Korea. When the plane touched down I started to panic! So glad I came though, been here 20 months and still loving it.

Just remember, if you dont like it here you can just go home again - a little wiser with a little more life experience!

That's funny. It reminds me of when I went skydiving. I was fine until the door opened, lol. I turned white as a sheet and panicked. But, I'm glad the guy pushed me out of the plane.

No and no. As long as you know what you're getting yourself into and aren't blinded by illusions of some glorious, exotic Far-Eastern adventure you'll do fine. Reading these boards and talking with a few FTs who'd been here a couple years gave me an accurate picture of what to expect and my expectations have turned out to be correct.

Trinity,

Make the decision that will bring you peace. I don't mean come to Korea expecting it to be peaches and cream, hunky-dory every day. Some days will be tough, some will be lonely. It's a learning curve, that's for sure. But you'll have daily struggles and challenges at home, too, they'll just be different ones than what you experience here.

But make the decision that deep in your heart you know is right for you. Don't let distracting thoughts, your ego, fear, your mom, anonymous posters on a message board, etc. make the decision for you. Only you know what's best, and sometimes it's hard to hear your own voice over all the distractions of life. Maybe Korea is the right choice, maybe staying home is, I don't know. But you know. Now you just have to "cut through the crap" and act on it.

Good luck. Don't worry too much. Whatever you choose, you'll be fine. Very Happy

You can't know wether you've made the right decision or not, until you've actually come here and given it a chance.

No point overthinking stuff when you are presumably sitting at home idle.

I think most young people get the "butterflys in the stomach", "am I really getting married" kind of 2nd thought cold feet before they make the trip here.

I have lived abroad for a large part of my adult life and I still get than feeling every time I change my country of residence. It is natural.

If you did your homework and due dilligence when you checked out your new school and have a return ticket in your pocket then all your worries seem to disappear shortly after you arrive.

Kick back, take a deep breath and prepare for the biggest adventure of your life. One thing we ALL can say about making this journey is that we are changed forever.

A large percentage of us, by the time we head home will have traveled to, seen and experienced things that folks back home could only dream about.

Instead of worrying about the petty things that people complain about here you should be thinking about the stories you will be able to tell you kids. The stroll along Chunggyechon, the visits to the buddest temples, climbing Sorraksan in the autumn, taking a long weekend and visiting the Great wall and Forbidden City in China, hitting the beaches in Thailand and diving in the Philippines, a weekend or a week touring the castles in Japan, shopping in HongKong, and having a beer in front of the 7-11 at 5am on a hot and sultry summer night.

Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime and don't get stuck in a self-made prison that many here get into. Send some money home to pay some bills but don't forget to live a bit too (and that does not mean just bending your elbow every weekend in Itaewon).
