For six decades, TIME has chronicled the triumphs and travails of Asia.

In this special anniversary issue, we pay tribute to the remarkable men and women who have shaped these times. The most tumultuous decades of the most populous continent on earth have produced an astonishing array of heroes. During the 60 years since TIME began publishing an Asian edition, it has been our privilege to encounter the most exceptional of them�on the campaign trail and the battlefield, in the boardroom and the research lab, on the factory floor and the film set. Nice to see the profile on Amartya Sen.

One of the greatest thinkers of the last 100 years.

I first heard of him in an undergrad philosophy class. Then when skimming through the usually staid (or trite or technical and insignificant) academic journals I came across a remarkably reflective and carefully written article of his and have respected it and everything else of his since.
