SEOUL Faced with a tumbling birthrate and women souring on the idea of marriage and family, the South Korean government is reaching out to a small group of people believed to have the power to avert a demographic catastrophe: prime-time drama writers.
Last month, the Planned Population Federation of Korea held a two-day seminar for writers of TV soaps and dramas and urged them to create more situations that show happy mothers with their children. The aim is to counter an anti-baby mood that is leading South Korea down the path to being, well, a smaller country.
"For many years we have been pondering what influences people the most, and we concluded it was TV dramas and other news and documentary programs," said Shin Sun-chol of the family planning group. "We are just asking the writers to be more considerate because some programs now depict career women as being very egoistical, thinking only of themselves."
The idea of leaning on TV writers for social engineering followed the release of a government study of 50 South Korean dramas that shows a television landscape in which single life is portrayed as cool, children as a burden, and love as something that does not always have to lead to marriage and a family.

Lately I've been interested in how much entertainment media can affect our views and life. Discuss. |

Isn't the Korean birthrate already below the 1.3 threshold? Meaning they're already too deep into the death spiral to pull out.
You heard it here first folks, Korea will be the first nation to start cloning human-beings, because there's no way an open immigration policy, or pro-family soap operas for that matter, will catch on in this land. |

Art/Entertainment mirrors but also influences society and blah blah blah.
Foreigners on this board, foreigners who know of Korea, really aren't interested in some open-ended, neutral, calm discussion of how entertainment media influences people's lives. We'd rather continue to bash and find fault with Koreans.
Now, this line is weird:
"We are just asking the writers to be more considerate because some programs now depict career women as being very egoistical, thinking only of themselves."
Uh... you want more Korean women to marry and have babies, and you're _upset_ (???) that Korean TV dramas depict (single) Korean career women as egotistical, self-centred biatches.... I don't get it. Aren't those programmes, those negative depictions the very thing the government wants to see more of? |

In general, the theme of a Korean drama is that life is hard: no matter how hard you work or how great your job is, there is someone to stab you in the back, screw you over, black mail you, etc. Family life always seems to show overbearing parents- in-laws who try to control the family. With the husband or wife, someone is cheating. If there's a b/f or g/f relationship, there is usually a triangle, or something keeping the star-crossed lovers apart, etc., etc. A drama is a drama. If you are showing a happy family, it's not interesting. I've never seen anything like "The Cosby Show" here, for example- Koreans don't seem too interested in sitcoms. Korean dramas seem very much like Mexican or other latin American soaps, but the birthrate in those countires isn't declining!!!!!
I think the key to increasing the birthrate is A. bettering the education system, and B. lowering the cost of apartments. People can't afford to have children these days- the cost of education and housing is absolutely out-of-control, and I don't think dramas are influencing the birth rate much...
*Edited again (I can't spell these days! )

Here's a wacky idea for the Korean government to try: Start forcing companies to offer maternity leave and make age discrimination illegal.
Virtually every young Korean woman I have ever met wants children very badly, and preferably more than one, but is afraid that they will have to throw their career away as soon as they have a kid because they'll lose their job when they take time off to have a baby and never get hired again because most companies refuse to hire a woman over 30.
Korea doesn't have a low birthrate because Koreans don't want children, it's because Koreans feel that they can't afford to raise them. |

personally, I believe that TV dramas really do affect Koreans' opinions. I used to edit subtitles for some major ones and the crap I used to see.....
There was commentary on everything from labour strikes to blue-eyed men. sometimes it seemed like there wasn't even an attempt to cover up the writers' (or sponsors') motives. They're crap. |

Maybe they should show being a good father and loving husband as cool.
A man comes home after work to have dinner with his family and help his kid with home work. He could be dressed in the latest fashions, a buff man( or girly man per current fad), and kiss his wife in front of the kids!!
That might make me think better of getting married and having kids. Maybe not, but I would watch just for the eye candy. |

the last thing korea needs is more people. the korean government should be thinking about sustainability and planning for the future of all its old people. having more babies is not a solution. |

South Korea, with some 48 million people, is a densely populated country. The land per capita is 2,310 m2, smaller than that of France (12,540 m2), the United Kingdom (4,290 m2), and Japan (3,102 m2). South Korea, with its population density at 460 persons per km2, has the fourth highest population density in the world, coming after Bangladesh, Germany, and Taiwan, excluding the city states of Singapore and Hong Kong. The actual population density is higher than its estimate due to the uninhabitable mountainous areas.

Korea will have to end up imposing the one child rule like China. People are so stupid the govt. has to step in. Unbelievable. Stop having so many kids folks, then complaining when you are poor. |

Limit the babies? Do you people even know what you are talking about? Sure there are a lot of babies...but that's because this country is so damn small.
By 2020 over 33% of the population will be retired. How insane is that?
As of now the government is giving incentives for having multiple kids.
They need to do more and stop blaming retarded TV shows. If everyone believed TV shows...being a gangster would be the #1 future job for boys. |
