Please enlighten me if you have done this: i hear that you can take a boat from incheon up to Vladivostok quite cheaply.
Only problem is maybe getting a visa for Russia.
Has anyone done this yet? Seems like a nice little adventure. Where did you stay and how are services and options once you get there? |

http://www.dongchunferry.co.kr/
It is called the Dongchun Ferry.
The website is in Korean but it gives you some vague information as a reference point.
The departure point is Sokcho Ferry Terminal which is about 4 to 5 hours bus ride from Seoul in Gangwon province.
The Sokcho ferry terminal is walkable distance to the Sokcho bus terminal.
The trip itself is long and slow with infrequent departures times. The last I heard, the ship itself was in poor condition.
The fares are inexpensive, but for the peace of mind it is far easier to just take Korean Air or Vladivostok Avia and fly there in 2 hours.
Any Russian travel agency can issue you a visa invite. There are at least 2 or 3 in Vladivostok.
You then just take the invite to the Russian embassy with your passport, photo, application form and payment. That's it. |

Thanks for the info soviet man.
It appears that vladivostok is a dangerous and crime-ridden hole. I guess the best way is never to leave the protection of your tour guide? I would actually be wanting to explore the area that borders NK. |

This is what the DPRK border looks like: a river, bridge and a small village. Not much actually and you would be forbidden from crossing anyway.
If Vladivostok is not your cup of tea, try Khabarovsk. Asiana and Dalavia airlines fly there every day (about 500,000 to 650,000 return) and it is only a 2hr flight from Incheon. It is a city on the edge of Siberia and what better time to go than mid-winter.
