Al Fayed Calls Diana Accident Report "Outrageous"
By Jeremy Pelofsky

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The father of Princess Diana's companion on Wednesday called "outrageous" a forthcoming report that said the couple's deaths were the result of a tragic car accident rather than a murder plot.

Mohamed al Fayed, the father of Diana's lover Dodi al Fayed and owner of the famed Harrod's department store in London, also questioned whether the investigator who headed the inquiry, Sir John Stevens, was blackmailed into ruling out foul play.

"It's shocking. It's completely outrageous that a leading Scotland Yard officer can come up with such an unbelievable judgment," al Fayed said in an interview with NBC's "Today" show.

Diana, who was 36, and Dodi al Fayed died after their chauffeur-driven Mercedes crashed in a tunnel in Paris in August 1997 as they tried to elude paparazzi on motorbikes.

A two-year inquiry by French authorities in 1999 ruled that al Fayed's driver Henri Paul, who was also killed, was to blame because he was drunk and driving too fast.

Stevens, the former head of London's police force, has spent almost three years probing what happened. His investigation extended to the British royal family, conducting a lengthy interview with Diana's ex-husband Charles.

Al Fayed said his son had bought an engagement ring for Diana and that she had told him hours before the crash that she was pregnant. He also accused the British government of involvement in the plot.

Stevens is "being definitely blackmailed to say exactly what the British intelligence want him to say," al Fayed said. Without citing the source of the information, he said that six months ago British intelligence agents stole Stevens' computer.

"I'm sure they find something very devastating for him and used what they have, information, to blackmail him," he said.

Al Fayed has charged that his son and Diana were murdered by British secret services because their relationship was embarrassing the royal household.

Witnesses, officials and royal commentators have dismissed arguments that the death of Diana, who was seen as one of the world's most glamorous people, was anything more than an accident.

The British Crown all throughout history has been surrounded by murders for all kinds of reasons.

I have my doubts about it being "just an accident". Given the level of security around them, no one in the Royal family dies easily in the usual manner of murder.

Where's that Fiat Uno? You'd think someone would have come forward by now.

Probably taken apart within hours of clipping the Mercedes.

A "car accident" gives exeptional plausible deniability--not rocket science to organize clipping a car in a tunnel (or wherever) that's perpetually trying to outrun the media.

Yes. It's completely outrageous that a cop can come up with facts proving the driver was drunk and say, "He was drunk. That's what caused the accident."

That's "unbelievable!"

Dania was banging a dude named Forstmann. He was going to run either for the NY Senate or for Prez, both of which against Hilary. Or so the story goes.

CLAIMS THAT Princess Diana dreamed of moving into the White House as America's First Lady were confirmed yesterday by a source close to the politically minded mogul she hoped would take her there.

"It is true," said a source close to Manhattan financier Teddy Forstmann, who considered running as a Republican in the 2000 Senate race.

In his new book, the late princess' butler said she had hoped to marry a New York billionaire and fantasized he would make her the new Jackie Kennedy.

"Imagine, Paul, me coming to England as First Lady on a state visit with the President and staying at Buckingham Palace," remembered her former butler, Paul Burrell, in a book published this week.

Though Burrell doesn't name the mogul in his book, "The Way We Were," his description of a silver-haired bachelor matches Forstmann, who was linked to the Princess in 1994.

"The late princess was very interested in Ted. She was attracted by his philanthropy and his work with children's charities, and by his political aspirations," the source said."

She was excited at the prospect of going to the White House with him. Exactly what you read [in Burrell's book] is accurate."

If it is true, it looks like Clinton was using the NSA to monitor potential political opponents. IF it is true. Who knows.

Klinton likely was keeping tabs on her only because he wanted a date.

Any bets on whether the Chief "investigator" Stevens is a high-ranking Freemason?

I betcha Idea

Whilst not doubting the ability of MI6 to conduct such an assignment I do think that they would have chosen a less chancy method.

It was 1 in the morning: the driver had been off-duty for some hours. He was pi$$ed. 90mph in those underpasses with a drunk driver? Have you ever driven that road?

I voted 'other' because I have no idea why the car crashed, but am inclined to think it was an accident (though I would never totally discount foul play - but I'd need to see more persuasive evidence).

They should all have been wearing their bloody seatbelts. Very irresponsible.

On the evidence available now, there was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of that car. This was a tragic accident.

Yes, case closed. I abstained from your poll, Igotthisguitar, as the central, most-plausible, data-based conclusion should be represented by more than a mere third-choice "other" option.

And if people want to keep peddling this or any other of their pet conspiracy theories, as usual, I invite them to produce their evidence...

For example: (1) he had bought an engagement ring...receipts? witnesses? where is the salesperson? where, exactly is the ring now, for that matter?

(2) she was pregnant...what did the autopsy say on this?

(3) MI-6 plot on behalf of intriguing royals...how exactly do you know this?

etc., etc.
