How to get 2 severence pays in 1 year. Thats right. No BS. This really works.
Step 1: Get a hogwan job.
Step 2: Remain employed for 6 months.
Step 3: Get fired, be lazy, talk back a lot. Don't do anything stupid Thats important. You just need to be really annoying and piss the boss off, not beat someone up or go on a shooting spree
Step 4: Once you are fired you are owned, by law, 1 months pay and a release letter.
Step 5: Repeat steps 1 through 4.
That means that in 1 year you work 2 jobs, and get 1 months 'fired' pay twice. Which equals 2 severence pays.

korea shoots itself in the foot with the contract minimum one year. i'd like to see more places, meet more people. after five months it gets to be such a damn routine that anyone gets 'lazy', and irritable. did you come to korea to live in the same cement neighbourhood seemingly eternally, same kids day after day while keeping upbeat and effervescent enough to maintain and buck up enrollment. so korea shoots itself.
you say you are legally entitled a release letter and a month's pay upon being summarily dismissed. i've heard that about the money, but how useful is the letter of release when immigration won't accept it until after ten months of the contract year have elapsed. so you've got four months to wait somewhere, probably working; china, wherever. and a 'firing' on your record with immigration. it makes more sense to fight off the dolor with inner fire and sit up straight the last six months. |

Interesting arguement. We are all entitled to a lot of things according to Korean labour law. How many of us actually get them? All of them.
Most of them. Some of them. Almost none. None.
Cheers
I wanted to do a poll thingy, but I guess I have to start a new message for that. |

mankind, that is totally classless and unprofessional.
Yes, many Korean hagwons are unprofessional and dishonest to their instructors, but that doesn't mean two wrongs make a right.. (very cliche I know, but true) |

I didn't say I do it. I simply noticed that it was possible while looking through labour law with my wife. She actually thought it was an interesting idea.
It is simply a way in which we can respond as workers, to the absolute control over which we are placed under here. The loophole has occured because it was needed to deal with corrupt business owners. Why not use it.
The government is unwilling to give foreign workers proper rights. So do what you can to help yourself. If what I proposed became regular practice, you might see the end of 1 year contracts, and $hitty work conditions, because the government would need to take steps to solve the problem.
They cannot just remove that feature, as nobody would ever come here again. They might have to give all workers, the rights that F2-1 holders now have, or god forbid F4 holders.
The truth is, you have no rights as a contract worker in Korea. Your only legal remody for complaints is the court system. The labour board is actually not supposed to help contract workers. They just do. But legally they have no grounds to help you. Because you are not labour, you're a contract worker. And if immigration and the labour board merge, like is being dicussed, we are all screwed completely.

All I have to say is that time after time, I have been asked to jump through hoops, but when it comes to helping you out in anyway if you get in a bind....nooooooooo way!!! I hate Koreans!!! Why, because I have nothing but bad experiences with these *beep* sent I been here. I've been in two different hagwons and each one of them has had nothing in mind other than there own profit at the expense of the students and the teachers. |

Sure it's interesting, if I was still a punk teen. No way one could justify screwing someone like that. Cos that's exactly what one would be doing by pulling a stunt like that. No way. Not cool. |

There are quite a few Russians and Turks here teaching English. I am sure they would be more than happy to take our jobs. Besides people would come here...most would just work illegally, the rest would have no other employment opportunities. Hey wait, that is what is happening now! |

On a totally unrelated note, has anyone ever claimed their traveler's checks were stolen hoping to get free money? A nice crime indeed! |

Or, Mr. Mankind, you can just buck up and try to be professional in what you do.
Or, you could further your education so you could seek a more interesting position.
Mr. Mankind's attitude is part of the reason why so many institute teachers are treated so poorly. Don't you see this all the time? There is a very nasty cycle of "tit for tat" in this industry that dirties the names of all of us and makes it almost embarrassing to say you are an EFL teacher.
In every occupation there are hazards and BS, but what makes you feel better at the end of the day, month, year, contract, is if you did a good job of it and really helped a few people in the process. I'm not suggesting being a doormat - but somewhere along the line having a little respect for yourself is great idea.
What goes around comes around and it is my belief that the karma-cycle is much faster in certain parts of the world. Make sure the door doesn't slam on your b*tt on the way out, Mr. Mankind. |

This is my main problem with illegal teachers. They claim that they are in it for the students not the money...and then they make posts like these which clearly show where their true interests lie. Actually if immigration and the labour board merge, the biggest losers would be the illegal teachers. No-one except them would come here. Why bother when you are going to be screwed over? Korea could then have more resources to divert to tracking them down and deporting them. But if enough legal teachers went elsewhere Korea then would be forced to solve the problem. If teachers did what you suggest, Korea could just change the law to make it mandatory to spend the full year in order to get the bonus and release letter. And then we would even be worse off than now. |
