what business does a grown male have taking a minor/boy to a hotel room who is not his son?

Other reasons would be-- his nephew, cousin, babysitting, watching over a friend's kid. Just because someone takes a child to their room and it is not their own doesn't necessarily mean something bad is happening.

In this case the boy ratted the guy out so we have more information than we normally would by merely observing a guy and a young boy going into a hotel room.

You're being a little unjust aren't you?

The victim’s statement to police

The victim (the 14 year old boy) told police he had never met the foreigner (Scott Vadim) prior to the foreigner approaching him in quest of information at about 8:00 pm on the 4th of January, when he (the victim) had gone out to buy some pastry in the vicinity of the Lord Vishnu Roundabout. The foreigner showed the victim a photo of the Haing Lay Hotel, and communicating by gestures, asked the victim to take him there. The victim complied, and when they arrived at the hotel, they parted, the foreigner going up to his room while the victim began walking back. But the victim had not gone more than a few steps before the foreigner ran out calling after him. Communicating by gestures, he mimicked singing into a microphone and pointed to the upper level of the hotel, which the victim interpreted as meaning the foreigner was inviting him to sing karaoke with him in the hotel, which the victim agreed to do because he knew the Haing Lay Hotel had a karaoke club inside. Instead of karaoke, however, the foreigner once upstairs led the victim to his bedroom, where there were 3 cans of beer waiting. He had the victim drink a can and a half of the beer before making him lie down on his bed, where he proceeded to fondle and mouth (ប្រើដៃ និងមាត់) the victim’s genitals and had the victim reciprocate with his own until orgasm was achieved (បានសម្រេច). When it was over, the foreigner asked the victim, gesturing and writing on the palm of his hand with a pen, how much money he wanted. The victim wrote down a figure of 400,000 riels ($100), to which the foreigner responded he did not have that kind of money, and took out instead 8,200 riels (a little more than $2) which he handed to the victim. The victim took the money and left, but down below he was suddenly met by arriving police who questioned him, which ended in the victim guiding police to the foreigner’s room.

He’s probably not even a ‘household name’ in his own house.

He’s been charged with the name inside his passport, which is Vadim Scott Benderman.

*snigger*

I know him. That’s him. I have heard rumors of his past interest in young boys, but I did not believe them. People had alleged in Seoul that there were pictures of young boys on his computer there, but I just figured that that was someone who didn’t like him spreading vicious rumors about him.

I guess it’s true then.

It takes a lot to shock me, but I’m shocked at this development. I really am. In Seoul, at one point at least, he would have been considered a “well known musician.” Not so much anymore.

He obviously needs help.

I know this guy from living in Seoul & he was very active in the local music scene. He also made a few television appearances. Never knew he would be down with this but innocent until proven guilty I suppose….

I saw his old band, Mirrorhouse a couple of times in Korea. I didn’t know him personally but I hope justice is served for the child he abused. Hope the Canadian, U.S., Korean, every government puts him on there lists if what he did was true. Human trafficking is a big deal. He needs to repent and get help from professionals.

I knew him since 2005 when he was a solo act in Seoul. There were a lot of people who lived in the expat enclave, known as Haebangchon. An incident happened in 2007, when he molested two boys in the neighborhood after he took them to his apartment. He found them crying in front of a convenience store because they were afraid to go home and feel the wrath of their alcoholic drunk for a father. So he took them in, showed him his equipment and got them to come close while having them listen to his music. Then he fondled them. How do I know this? Because he confessed to me the next day after returning from the police station. As it turns out, the parents were terrified that their family’s name would be ruined. So they didn’t press any charges. The really horrifying outcome of that incident was that it empowered Vadim to think that he could get away with it again.

Dear Magnanimous,

I am a journalist in Korea and I would be curious to hear further details of your recollection.

If you would like to contact me in confidence, you can do so here: [email protected]

Thank you.

My main problem with this story is this quote: “When we opened the door, the boy ran out.” Did they speak to the boy?

I know Vadim, but can’t claim to know him well enough to know whether he liked young boys. He always had beautiful girlfriends in Korea for the 5 years I knew him.

All in all, I can’t convict him for what — being a former crime reporter in the U.S. — smells a bit fishy. Could it be true? Yes. Could it be corruption and extortion? Yes. We shall see in due course. If guilty, he [Mod Edit] up royally. If innocent, Cambodia is not a place I will ever visit on my own.

There is no issue taking a boy, who isn't your son, into your home. But as you said, a foreigner in a foreign country with a local boy in the home is a little iffy.

I hope the comments from people that "knew" him during his time in Korea are just people bullshitting and looking for attention.

We don't know what went down, for all we know he might have just had the boy there to buy a dime bag off of him and then shack up with his gf or the kid is a local food/beer delivery wag.

If he is a pedo, then throw the book at him. But yeah, could just be drugs, which is stupid and illegal, but not despicable or anything.

Ooo oooo, I have a good idea. Let's post about this topic as much as possible, so that the Korean media will pick it up. That way we can all bring harsher visa regulations down on ourselves!

I don't sympathize with the guy at all, and I think kiddie fiddlers are scum, but making this news public on Korea blogs and Korea forums does no good whatsoever.

Before you know it, the Korean Government will start requiring police records from every single country you have stamps from in your passport. Koreans generally protect other Koreans from losing face in public, even after they are convicted (unless the crime is extremely heinous). Why don't foreigners do the same?

I'm glad I naturalized last year. I can only imagine what new hoops you all will have to jump through should this piece be blasted all over the K-media (with help from your fellow foreigners, no less).

Sorry, but I consider the prevention of child rape more important than saving my face or having to fill out some extra forms. You may think that your fun, not hearing bad things about people from your country, and not having to stand in line at a government office are more important, and you are entitled to that opinion, but I don't have to agree with it and act accordingly.

IF you know about or suspect abuse, then definitely take immediate action to stop it. But the guy's already in jail. What good will us condemning him online do? Maybe to make the point there are sickos in the ESL industry? Are there more here than in the general population?

About the lostprophets case:
Quote:
“She said she broke up with him because he liked children and he liked bestiality – she was grossed out by it.”

Quote:
The insider said she first heard rumours about Watkins targeting children for sex abuse at a music awards ceremony as far back as 2004.

Quote:
She added: “People like me weren’t surprised. This [rumours of Watkins’ behaviour] has been going about for a while now.
“I don’t know why it didn’t come out sooner.”

The reaction within the rock music world was similar, she said.

“People in the industry could see how it made sense – he has always been a real pervert and wanted to go to the most extreme lengths.

http://www.davidicke.com/headlines/female-fans-warned-for-nearly-four-years-that-lostprophets-singer-ian-watkins-was-obsessed-with-child-porn-so-why-didnt-the-police-act-sooner/

If one woman hadn't brought him down (a person not mentioned above), he wouldn't be in jail. He'd still be out there abusing kids. It makes you wonder how long some sickos get away with things like this.

But there is a problem with that statement. CRCs did not stop western teachers from committing certain crimes in this country. Like the girl who mailed herself drugs hidden in a cake nor do they stop the drunken behavior that is very questionable in legality.

How far will you go to prevent a crime no western teacher has committed in this country (that we know of)?

Just because it isn't 100% effective, doesn't mean a bare-minimum safeguard like a background check FOR TEACHERS shouldn't be required.

So, you're fine with keeping quiet about this because it will inconvenience some of you with more paperwork? What if you knew someone in Korea that was a pedo? Would you also keep quiet about it in case the media finds out about it?

Anyways, my guess is the Korean media won't care about it. Every time a foreigner gets in trouble in Korea, people on Dave's think Korean media will go buckwild with it. I can't even remember the last time that happened. I think it was last year when those US Soldiers went around shooting people with a BB gun? Then they took off on a high speed chase, one of them ended up shot by a police officer. I think it was on the news for a week. Or the "see these rocks??!?!?" guy, the whole thing was caught on video, nobody cared. On the news for a couple days. The guy didn't even get fired.
