I have a much cheaper solution for those looking to purchase an English navigation system but DONT want to pay the Korean price.

I was in Yongsan with the kr gf in search of a navigation system with English menus + maps. Suffice to say, it became a difficult task. Eventually we found a couple places close to Itaewon station. Among those places we only found 1 unit that comes preloaded with the English menu and maps. This unit is made by DAEWOO , model # DPN 7000.

This link provides info about this model.
http://www.autosound21.co.kr/shop/m_mall_detail.php?ps_goid=2171&ps_goid=2171

BUT only one problem. This unit will cost you around 500,000 won for the English version. On the other hand this same model with run you about 300,000 at worst.. but we managed to find some for 260,000.

So basically whitie is paying almost double the price for the same model.

I have already bought this model at the 500,000 won price before coming up with this ingenious idea.. lol

What you need to know:

At the back of this unit there is a slot for a compact flash memory chip. (the chip is included with the unit) The only difference between the English and Korean model is the contents on THIS CHIP.

I would hate for anyone else to pay 500,000 won, when they can pay 280,000 at any shop in yongsan that usually sells this model.

Here is my solution:

What i've done is copied the entire contents from my compact flash memory card that has all the english maps + menus ect on it. Its basically the software operating program. Without this chip the navigation system renders itself completely useless.

So if your looking to buy an English navigation system BUT dont want to pay the "whitie" price , then i would reccomend buying the Korean version and then I can email anyone who wants the english maps.

All you need is a usb compact flash card reader/writer for your computer (sells for 5 or 10,000 won in yongsan). Put in your compact flash card into the reader/writer and copy the contents on it. takes seconds.. and then put it back into your unit and away you go.. very simple!!

For those who dont know what a compact flash card is see below :

Btw.. ya ya ya.. i know there is someone on this board that will say the reason its more expensive is because of the time and money Daewoo put into developing the English maps for this unit.. well.. Perhaps this is true, but it shouldnt cost whitie almost double the price.

cheers.

pm me for anymore details Wink

Nice work! Have you verified that it will work on other units?

I have the same unit and haven't had any luck getting an update for it. What is your software version? I wonder if it's a later one than mine?

I have this unit in English also...

I had a bit of a problem with it so I took it over to their service center at Gasan Digital Complex. Anyways, they loaded up the newest version of the software and told me that there will be a big update for the English software coming down the pipe in March or April.

The guys, being really friendly, promised to e-mail it to me as soon as they get it.

There are better navigation systems out there - but if you need english, this one ia pretty much your only choice.

This is a great idea.

After loading the English menus etc, is there an option for dual languages, or do you have the English only?

Why dont u take it back to the place u bought it? unless u got it used from someone.. in any event i have the data from my card backed up on my computer.

The data for my card is about 630 megs. So emailing it would be out of the question.

I just uploaded the file to MEGAUPLOAD . Its in winrar format (under 250 megs). anyone who wants it just pm me your email.

cheers.

Would the English menu work on other makes of GPS other than the Daewoo model that you have? I assume not, but worth asking.

I was clear in stating that I assumed that it was only good for that particular model. I already checked with my manufacturer and there is no English availability, so thanks for your sarcastic answer anyway.

I uploaded the data to MegaUpload.

Just click on the link below or copy and paste it. Its in rar format. The rar file will unpack into one folder. Copy that folder on your compact card.

enjoy

Gideon, thanks for uploading that, it worked a treat. The software's less than 6 months old. The next time I go on a new expressway the system won't be freaking out thinking I'm driving over rice paddies Very Happy

Anyone else who downloads this, make sure you don't over-write your settings in the "Save" folder, especially a file called "latest" which has any personal locations you've saved. If you miss that, you'll only be able to navigate yourself to Gideon's house.

--------------------

On a side note, has anyone been able to get the PMP features to work on this? Apparently it needs some software (a media player application) down-loadable off the website, but it's all in Korean so I've got no idea how to get to it.

This system even has a feature that lets you broadcast an FM signal to your car's radio. I've tried it and it works, but my car radio is a little crappy and it can't pick up the weakish signal too well. This is an ideal feature if you want to play MP3s or podcasts through your car radio.
