Here's a link to an article I found rather interesting about Aussie ex-pats... though sadly no mention of us ESLers. I thought I'd do my own quick poll to ascertain why Aussies are leaving Australia for greener pastures OS. Is it really because we're all up ourselves?

Recent figures indicate there are now almost 1 million Australians living overseas, but there has been no serious government attempt to find out who they are, why they leave, or whether they are coming back.
Now the Opposition is pushing for a Senate inquiry into the so-called Australian diaspora with the aim of shedding light on why 5 per cent of Australians prefer to call somewhere else home.
An inquiry is likely to irritate some, who suspect that those leaving are probably a bit up themselves anyway. |

Haha! actually waterbaby they banned me for 3 years. There was no charming the old boy at immigration, he searched and interrogated me- where did you work, stay, etc. It was just after the GST had been brought in, so the govt was on a major drive to clamp down on illegal workers and under the table jobs. Of course i dobbed in all the bosses who'd cheated or otherwise annoyed me.
Oz was great! i had a great run there- mostly from police. Love to go back someday - especially coral bay, (the jewel of the west,) and Melbourne (happening place.)
You aussies have a great country!!!! |

I was thought Aussies left Australia because they have that cool recipricol agreement with England that they can work for up to two years in each other's countries.
Most Aussies I've met do exactly that.. and bounce around all over Europe knowing they can break that 2-years into sections or whatever.. plus they make significantly more in Britain than Oz.
I know if I were Australian.. I'd definetely be doing that.. I think I'd do something like 8 months London 8 months living off that money elsewhere.. kind of like that and stretch the thing out as long as possible.. plus London is a great cheap international hub to get anywhere in the world and great prices..
A good deal. |

I left Australia because I was sick & tired of the shortcomings I saw here. A year in Korea has made me realise that all cultures have there problems, and life is what you make it (obvious I know, but you have to work it out for yourself right?) Back in Australia and I'm over a lot of the former annoyances but still not ready to settle down here. I will one day though, because there is so much beauty here and the quality of life is fantastic. I consider myself very lucky to have that Australian passport! |

I would love to live in Aussie. However I really hate snakes, and the spiders are bit scary.
However aussies and kiwis have it great. We can go work in eachother's country at a moments notice, no visa requried just show up flash your passport and your in for as long as you want.

Hmmm, perhaps it's an attitude that only another Aussie would understand. Kind of sad, really, one of the things I despise about the Australian culture. "So, you think you're too good for Australia, do ya?"
Ever heard of the Tall Poppy Syndrome that runs rampant in Oz? Cuts down anyone who dares to try and reach beyond average. |

i left because I was alittle bit bored as i just travelled through Europe and Asia for about a year, went back to oz and went I want to go back to Asia.
However, what hurried my decision is that my former g/f insisted on marrying(I"M am still quite young) and freaked when i said no. It was as good an excuse as any to continue my adventures. |

I think Australia is too good for me (in a roundabout way).
Out of a decent university with a degree has given me a snowball's chance in hell in finding a job. Toilet paper has more value than my current degree at this moment in time.
No prizes for guessing what degree I have, starts with "I" and ends in "T". (No, it's not a Bachelor of Idiot, even thought it has a great ring to it.. :) )
I think it's a combination of the industry slump, and my outdated skills (9 months new), plus lack of industry related experience. The ultimate catch 22. To get a job, you need experience. You get experience by having a job. Great.
So I thought about where I was heading in life, in terms of career, and what I was doing with myself. I enjoy the English language; spoken, written or otherwise, and I've had issues with Korean overseas students in Australia and their (in)ability with the language. I thought maybe I could make a difference.
I'm not doing this for the money. I think you're just setting yourself up to miss on out all the other good things that working overseas can potentially offer, if you're too focused on the fiscal rewards. Honestly... ... I'm in it for the chicks. YEAH! :)
I'm still in the Great Brown Land (that's Australia in case you might be confused), and planning my next course of action. I've been contacted by interested parties who would like me to work for them, so I'm deciding whether to take my next step into the world of ESL.
It's a completely massive tangent from my original career goal, but I think I can be equally happy in ESL as I would be sucking up to corporates in an IT related job.
We'll have to wait and see.. :)
