Hey all,
I'm thinking about trying to get away for about four days sometime after the 13th. Does anybody have any advice for me on where to stay, good deals etc.? Nothing is set in stone, so anything would be of help.
thanks |

Crap.....I remember this awesome hostel that I was staying at with Oirish John and Chip when we were in HK last winter...we were only there for 2 nights, and they had a curfew and it was a pain to get to, but the people had no problem with you drinking until the wee hours, and it had a spectacular view of the harbor and was quiet to boot. If you're going for more than just drinking until dawn in a bar, this was the place to crash.
But the name eludes me...it's way up on the top of a hill, though! |

Stay in Mongkok: hot bed of shoping, food, convenience.
If you want partying - then somewhere near Lam Kwai Fong because Taxis back to Kowloon will cost you unless you find someone to shack up with (that's my best advice - and LKF is the place to do just that).
Causeway bay is nice, but if you venture into Tsim Tsa Tsui propper and want to do the public bath and massage - be careful 'cause triads are there. My tatts got me some interesting looks from other tattoed "business men," but the lass escourting me cleared up the matter and all was fine. It was just a bit hairy because my Cantonese can't keep up with the marble-mouthed Chiu-chow dialect the "business man" was barking.
I don't do cheap hostels. If I go there I go with guns blazing and want the red carpet. If you want that then you can try a search for the infamous Chungking Mansions.
Mongkok is on the Kowloon-tong side.
If you want a quaint experience - head off to Lantau island
Hong Kong is my second favorite place in the world. Love it to death.
Have fun,
Joe |

Thanks for the advice all. I'm usually with Joe when it comes to hostels, but I guess it might be worth looking into. Is December a good time to go? Does HK have a busy season? |

December is a great time to go...the christmas lights are up on the buildings around the harbour...it is not that busy in HK...the weather is great as it is not humid anymore...
for hotels...i always recommend at least one night with a harbour view and the YMCA is a great choice for a cheap harbour view....
Roger...a poster on the china boards...always recommends a guesthouse on the kowloon side...says it is cheap and clean..look for guesthouses on the internet for more of a choice... or post on the china off-topic board or maybe do a search on the hong kong board...
i wouldn't send my worst enemy to chungking if he could afford anything better...but as tiger says it is cheap and well-located....
a trip to cheung chau island is always nice once you are here...an afternoon ferry ride and some good seafood...make sure to take the slow ferry as you can sit out and have a beer and watch the outlying islands go by... |

Just looking over my Lonely Planet guidebook, and I was wondering what's a good central location to see a little bit of everything. Joe, you mentioned Mongkok. Is there any other place where you can get a little sight seeing, bar hopping, and shopping? That would be appreciated. |

Hong Kong is real small...whether you are on the island or in kowloon...everything important is fairly close...except for stanley which is on the other side of hk island...
don't worry about being in the centre of things...the public transport system is cheap and realiable...find a hotel you can live with...price and accomodation wise and you will be fine...
i think they are giving out a coupon book when you come to hk these days...my mom got one when she came in september.... |

As far as shopping goes Joe, I heard that it was a good place for Mens clothes, especially nice shirts. |

That I can't help too much, as I mainly go there for films, flins and fun, but in Tsim Sha Tsui I saw a few places. Wished I remembered their names and addy's. Your best bet - if Scott doesn't chime in - is to ask at the airport tourist info kiosk. They're quite helpful.
As Scott said, HK is small and if you're there for four days you can do a lot. victoria Peak, Star Ferry, Lam Kwai Fong at night, etc.
Have fun,
Joe |

Men's shirts....i can't think of anything specific...there are cheap night markets and stanley is a lot like itaewon where you can get seconds and discontinued lines...stanley is the place to go if you are a bit on the big size...one of the few places to get xxl....marks and spencers is reasonable priced...and there is one in every big shopping mall...if you are normal sized then every flagship of every designer can be found in hk...
and of course there are the tailors...can't walk down nathan road without a dozen guys offering you new suits and fake rolexes...i had a new suit wrapped up with my tailor's name on the bag on my shoulder and still had guys asking me if i wanted a new suit.... |

There is a Hong Kong Tourist Promotion Office in Seoul (I used to date a girl who worked there)...perhaps you can get some hotel listings from them. They are located in the Hotel President in Myeongdong near City Hall and Lotte Dept. Store.....I'll have to dig up their phone number....... |

How much do you want to spend on a hotel....?
I booked a 3 star place at the airport that was $50 a night and was super central in TST. The airport had some really decent deals. Take a bus one way to Vic Peak. Those drivers are crazy. You also get to see these really funky cemetaries built into the cliff wall due to the lack of space. I may go back to Hong Kong over Christmas also. I missed Macau last time and want to also see some of the other islands.
Chungking is a craphole but is interesting with all of the different nationalities staying there. Some of the Indian restaurants are really great |
