I have a Sony VAIO that I bought in Canada... and until recently I've had no problems with it (I think a virus got me)
Regardless of the software I've used, its played DVDs from every region.. so I'm not sure if special software is needed, since I believe the hardware itself supports it.. |

i was considering a vaio, but it lacks decent performance. if you play the occasional game, forget about it...
i went with a d800 from dell... it cost me about 3 200 000 won, but it's well worth it.. comes with widescreen and a kickass gfx card.. |

Won't simple games life SimCity work well on the new Z1 series? The graphics: Graphics
ATI MOBILITY RADEON 16 MB video DDR SDRAM, Dual display support
I admit I don't know what that means. Is it enought to play SimCity or Civilization III? I don't play the heavy games like StarCraft.
I was going to buy Samsung Sens X10, but many said it is not good. |

I disagree. The Sony GRT series are excellent notebooks. The dells I looked at didnt even come close to matching the performance of the highend sony notebooks.

That is the notebook I got, far better than any dell you can get in Korea. The widescreen doesn't matter when you are sporting a Sony 16" monitor, you get more monitor space than those WXGA monitors. The Pentium M class notebooks are for saving power, not playing the occasional game. A true Pent 4 Mobile will out speed any of the Pentium M centrio notebooks - the ones dell korea is selling.
Now about buying it in Canada - is this just because you want English software? Your warrenty will not be worldwide. Also the warrenty is only good for 1 year.
The only complaint I have against Sony is they SUCK in Korea for buying accessories. I just got back from the Sony Store (main one in Apukujong) and they said Sony Japan dictates what they can sell/not sell...so all the accessories are ONLINE ordering ONLY.
I'd suggest if you are going to come back to Korea for any length of time you buy your sony notebook here, not in Canada.
If you want a decent notebook, Dell Canada has a WAY better selection than Dell Korea - and you can get a pretty decent notebook, with world wide support.
I researched notebooks for a long long time. Being in Korea is a catch 22 with notebooks. Your selection here is limited, yet you can service it in country if there is a problem. Your selection in USA/Canada is HUGE, but 90% of the notebooks you cannot service in Korea.
Good luck, if you do go with Canada, I'd suggest forget using those crap stickers, and just buy an external keyboard with hangul characters on them. It is easier to type, and saves your notebook keys from abuse.
EDIT: oh yeah NEVER go with a crap 16mb of video memory on a notebook - that just makes a good notebook crap if you want to do multimedia. Also those shared memory video cards are CRAP. The ATI ones that take your regular ram and use it for video memory.
Don't believe me, go check out some web reviews where they map performance - it is HORRIBLE. |

So I shouldn't buy the VAIO?
P.S. I am American, not Canadian. |

I wouldnt buy that one. If you want a light wieght notebook that has power either check out IBM, DELL or COMPAQ.
The Sony notebook I have is one heavy MOFO. If I was to buy another notebook, I would go with something lighter, meaning 14-15" screen.
Post what you want in a notebook and I am sure a few of us can suggest something. If you are going back to America there is SO much selection, I envy you! |

I'll post what I want and make a poll. People like polls. The sens x10 graphic is Nividia Geforce4 Go 440 64MB.
I cannot make a poll here, so I guess it will be under General Discussion. |

Im on my VAIO right now...cute little computer, definately cosmetically appealing. I got it here in korea a few months ago, all the top stats, and had english stuff put onto it.
I have to say im not too impressed with it. Like another person said a few posts up, it lags quite often. On some movies and games it slower sometimes.....VERY annoying....i would keep looking for something better.
I was all gungho on this one, and been left dissapointed and for the almost 2 mill i spent id wish id done more research.
cheers |

How about you post which model.
As I mentioned, unless you go with the Sony GRT series, the other notebooks are more for portability then for real power.
The Samsung X-15 has a good price too.
The things you need to worry about in notebooks is the cpu, ram, video memory and hard drive. If the hard drive is going to be at least 5400 RPM, and video memory dedicated 32mb min. then the rest should fall into place.
I love my sony except it is SO heavy But I can do anything like movies, games etc np. |

I'm not a fan of Compaq's, but IBM and Dell both make pretty good notebooks. Toshiba makes a pretty good line of notebooks now also. They didn't used to, but they've come a long, long way. The performance/price ratio on them is pretty good. The price definitely beats out IBM, at any rate. |

Not quite true. They used to be the market leader and had the top-rated laptops up until the mid/late 90's when they started getting complacent and the competition ate them alive. |

True, but hell, 5 years is ancient history as far as notebooks go. They've improved their product line a lot, while I think Dell has actually gone down in quality. Apple's the same way, I don't think their iBooks are up to the quality that they were putting out even 2 years ago. |
