Is it easy to get photos from digital cameras printed and also put on cd there? Also, is it cheaper or more expensive than getting regular pictures printed? I've heard Korea is technologically up to par, but just want to make sure before I drop $250 on a new digital camera.

Very easy. Korea's technology standards are far ahead of most countries - concerning products and services such as computers, cameras and digitial appliances.

If you want to print your own pictures here from your digital camera just plug it into a computer or printer over here and print. I recently bought a HP Photosmart 750 (Hewlett Packard) printer at Technomart for USD$80 - and any digital camera can be easily plugged into the USB inlet on the front of the printer and printed (no computer needed).

As for the cost - I am using special Photoprint ink cartridges and photolaser paper which cost approx USD$8 per cartridge - and are easily available to purchase at most office supply neighbourhood shops.

As for saving onto CD - someone will have to answer that......

P.S. - Before you spend $250 on a digital camera there - why not purchase one over here for half that price - choose from Nikon, Olympus, Cannon, Samsung, Benq, 2000/3200/4000 pixels with all the optional accessories.

Purchase your camera elsewhere ... not Korea. Prices are higher here.

DO NOT buy a Samsung model. Quality is crap, and color consistently very poor (green look -- ick).

See www.steves-digicams.com

That sight gives good reviews, and has sample photos for all of the cameras which are of the same locations/objects, so you can compare cameras.

My advice is to purchase a Canon Powershot A70 model. They are the #1 selling digital on the market, and for good reason. You can save a little money with an A60, which is 2 Megapixel instead.

You don't need anything higher than 2 megapixel for up to 5x7 prints (unless you plan to crop your images a lot). I'd suggest getting a 3 mega, or a 2 if you want to save some cash. I shoot virtually all of my photos in 2 megapixel on the medium-quality mode (even though my camera is a 3 mega) so I can fit more on my CF card. The quality is superb for up to 5x7.

Another good camera brand is Sony, however they are expensive. You do get more accessories with the Sony cameras, for the money, though.

And lastly, print the digital photos at the photo stores. They often can print them while you wait, and cost is cheaper here than even back home. It's easy to find such photo stores. Price is very good -- maybe I pay 300 won per photo, or about 30 cents US for a 4x6 print. Keep in mind that with digital, you only print the pics you want, so you save money by not printing the bad ones. And you can always keep a file on your disk/computer to print later or just view.

Digital is definately the way to go for you.

I love my little Sansung camera- but it is a 35 mm point and shoot (Pronta 1200), which takes better pictures anyway.

I won't get into the 33mm v. digital debate here, but I use my H.P. printer scanner to get my pictures on disk and online quite easily.

Though I said this in my Yongsan Guide last year, this is no longer an absolute truth, though it used to be. Now, for the first time, many models are cheaper in Korea than in other countries, provided you buy online, not from a real live retailer.

I'm headed to the US next week so I investigated the prices of cameras at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA and Wal-mart in the US, thinking I'd take advantage of the trip. I discovered that some cameras are actually cheaper in Korea than the US. The camera I purchased, an HP 850, was quite a bit less here in Korea (from Interpark) than at the American stores. It's possible HP is dumping them here, but this was also true for many Olympus models (which happen to be built in Korea), and for the Minolta Z-1.

A good Korean search engine for prices is www.omi.co.kr. If you buy in Korea, you'll also get a warranty that's good here. Most cameras purchased in the US *don't* have warranties good outside the US (Canons, Sonys and Kyoceras are among the exceptions to this rule). By the same token, most warranties on cameras bought here aren't good in the US.

IAWTP. I recently purchased a Kyocera SL300R in Korea online. I was surprised that I could not find a cheaper online price for this model on any U.S. site.

There are also numerous shops that will print for you here and the quality is very good. Itaewon - there is a kodak shop that print excellent quality for 400 won a print. Other places will do it for 300 won outside of the centre of Seoul.

Dropping onto CD? Anywhere. Any photo shop.

There are some online places that will print photos you upload for 200~250 won for a 3 X 5 print. Try. Digital Image Express Club

Hey, that's the new camera that sort of folds or twists, isn't it? They're pretty slick.

My last camera was a Kyocera (S3L), which we foolishly lost on the train last month while trying to take care of the baby. The HP replaces it.

You got it! Extremely small and fun to use. At 3.2 mps, quality is not bad either.

The S3L we (ok, I) lost last month was also really small, and I believe the size was our undoing. We went a whole day without realizing it was gone. The new HP is an SLR-sized unit with a big jesus lens on it. If it's not with us, we'll know it.

I miss the old camera though. Kyoceras are great cameras.

For Canadians, Boxing Day had some great deals on cameras. Plus, you can order online through Future Shop and have someone on the other end receive it if you are going back for a visit. I thought I was going to regret not buying a camera in Yongsan last fall but it turns out I made the right decision. I expect Circuit City or Best Buy have had similar deals.

do you plan to not have computer at home and do everything in an internet cafe? Are you going to give the disk to a print shop or do you plane to manipulate the photos yourself?
Will you upload the files to a computer and work on them in photoshop, etc..?
What are you thinking about doing?
by the way, your question is not stupid at all..it's very interesting.

I bought my Nikon 4300 for 400 KWon in Busan, which I thought was a very decent price. I don't believe that Korea has higher prices in digital cameras, and even if so, I'm not going to wait seven months before I visit home over a ten-dollar difference.

I agree that the Canon A60/70 is excellent. It was my second choice but I may go with Canon next time.

Saving onto CD is simple, provided you have a CD recorder on your computer, and is a good way to archive photos. Digital's great, and once you're used to that instant gratification, you'll never go back to film.
