I found these poll results, on the Lonely Planet website. Whilst Seoul has its faults, I don't believe it deserves to be on this worst cities list. There are many other more deserving candidates imo.

Quote:
Your 9 most hated cities

1.Detroit, USA - Crime, pollution and crumbling infrastructure dont appeal to you.

2.Accra, Ghana - Ugly, chaotic, sprawling and completely indifferent to its waterfront location.

3.Seoul, South Korea - According to one comment, Its an appallingly repetitive sprawl of freeways and Soviet-style concrete apartment buildings, horribly polluted, with no heart or spirit to it. So oppressively bland that the populace is driven to alcoholism.

4.Los Angeles, USA - A highly contentious pick, placed here because of its uncontrolled sprawl, pollution, appalling traffic and ugly freeways.

5.Wolverhampton, England - So bad that we dont even have it on this site! Check out post 35 on this thread.

6.San Salvador, El Salvador - Widely acknowledged as the grubbiest of the Central American capitals.

7.Chennai, India - We describe it as lacking Mumbais prosperity, Delhis history or Bengalurus buzz. Even the movie stars are not that hot. You think were being generous.

8.Arusha, Tanzania - A gateway to natural wonder that has more than its share of rust. Get out as quickly as you can.

9.Chetumal, Mexico - Combining the worst of mass tourism and outlying decay, Chetumal just doesnt charm you.

Does that sum it up for you, or are there still more deserving candidates?

My pick.

1. Cebu City. Slum, slum, and more slum. Beggars coming up to your window and knocking on it or smacking your car at red lights.

I glanced through the comments on the link. Not one mention of China. Some Chinese cities have it all: pollution, crowds, noise, sameness of people, businesses, streets, and buildings. Of course it is a big world, but some cities in China deserve a thumbs down too.

Some of my nominees would be:

Medan (Sumatra Indonesia)
Dacca (Bangladesh)
Shenzhen (China)
Johore Bharu (Malaysia)

All of the cities in India I visited (excluding Mumbai...maybe) Some great tourist sites, but the filth and poverty we're a bit much. Especially the high numbers of children beggars and hungry/sick animals/children.

I agree the architectural monotony in S. Korea is very unusual, as is the monotony in clothing styles (especially in Seoul), but it really seems like a very nice city to me...I like it a lot.

I would guess the poll was heavily influenced by a lot of disgruntled English teachers...but maybe not.

Feel free to have a laugh and to not take it too seriously.

Worst cities I've been in? Mexico City. Pollution and crime. Winnipeg. Snow and mosquitoes. Las Vegas. Whoever said there's more to Vegas than gambling and strippers was lying.

Johor Bahru isn't a great place to spend more than a night for a morning flight. I also loathe Los Angeles for its ridiculous traffic sprawl. Seoul -- well, it has a bit of truth to it. A beautiful city if your favorite color is Concrete Grey. Korea has great sights but not its architecture.

Lol at the website, M.R. I'd say drivers in China, are worse than Las Vegas, which I visited last year. At a pedestrian xing in Quanzhou, I nearly got run down from behind, by a car parked on the sidewalk, that suddenly took off across the zebra xing. Same thing happened in Nanjing, & it was raining. I whacked my umbrella on the car's bonnet, I was so annoyed. A Canadian friend living in China (but now safely back in BC) also nearly got wiped out from behind, on a zebra xing. Korean drivers are marginally better.

Seoul & Bangkok both have redeeming features. Eg in Seoul, an efficient subway, and in Bkk, a wonderful river taxi system (Chao Phraya). Both have interesting temples & palaces:

I went to Houston last year for a cousin's wedding, and I saw nothing good in the whole city. Wait, no, there was a nice park and a butterfly museum. But I was only there a week, so I guess I could be missing things. I would never ever want to live in Houston.

I definitely don't think Seoul should be on the list. I really like Seoul.

Concrete grey *and* seafoam (institution) green - seriously, check it out. The vast majority of the newer buildings are those two colors (seafoam for the windows/trim/etc.). The airport is the same color scheme. As are the airport buses. As are the Korea Air flight attendant uniforms...

The older buildings were all brown and brick-red.

That said - the buildings are very well maintained. Not stained and dirty like buildings in many cities, including ones with much better architecture (e.g. - Hong Kong). It's a bit boring, but I wouldn't' call it ugly...just neutral.

Dallas (Dull-assed) is the same way. Actually most of Texas is, with the exception of Austin. I've heard San Antonio is pretty cool.

That's what I've heard too. Shame my cousin couldn't have been living in Austin instead of Houston.
