To think hotmail gives you a measly 2 MB and Yahoo 4 MB while charging for more space. Now the ever loveable Google announced Gmail coming soon which will offer an amazing 1 GB of free storage. I know I'll be signing up as will half the planet. I find it hard to believe they could have that much space and how can they stop people from taking advantage by signing up for multiple accounts?

The free email service, called Gmail, will let each user hold on to about 500,000 pages of email and search through those messages using the familiar Google search interface, the company said in a statement. They will also be able to organise their messages in "conversations" that group a message together with all replies to it, much like internet newsgroups organise messages into threads, says Wayne Rosing, vice president of engineering at Google, in Mountain View, California.

A small number of Google employees have been testing the service for about a year, Rosing says. This week other Google employees will be invited to participate and to invite some of their friends and relatives. The service should be generally available within "weeks or months," he says.

Also starting this week, the public will be able to learn more about Gmail here, Rosing says.

One way Google will pay for the provisioning of that 1GB of storage per user will be by selling advertisements that will appear next to email messages and be keyed to the content of each message, Rosing says.

Gmail will have a built-in spam filter and a feature that lets customers report spam to help Google fine-tune the filter, says spokeswoman Eileen Rodriguez. Other antispam technologies will be added over time, she says.

I prefer Google as a search engine.

One thing about the email though.. they will scan your emails looking for key words.. and then throw up related advertisements according to what you were writing about..

Weird.

I don't care. They have to make money somehow off it. I'm just happy I'll be able to get/send more than 2 pics. You can send songs and video clips etc with this much space (up to 10MB attachments at one time).

You'll be able to archive your emails and the ones your receive too. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, as I wonder if you'll be able to only search through *your own* emails, or be able to read someone else's.

no pop-ups!

There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail. Gmail does include relevant text ads that are similar to the ads appearing on the right side of Google search results pages. The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program. This technology already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.

I would say to everyone if you value your online privacy signing up to an email account is probably the worst thing you could do.
Google isn't the happy smiley search engine it appears to be on the web site, it plays a huge role in what gets listed and what dosen't. It's simply another tool in invading the publics privacy without asking you.
A recent advert for a job at Google included the requirement for the candidate to have top level U.S. security clearance......
If I were you I'd steer clear.

I'm totally game on. Hotmail drives me up the wall. It has a million kinks and cramps, plus they are always trying to con you into paying for service.

DOuble Plus, 1 GB! No way! That's huge! You could store the whole Library of Congress Porn collection on that baby!

I say: SIGN ME UP!

MSN is bothered by the massive growth of Google. They have anounced that they are going to create a new search method to compete.

What you see is Google countering by attempting to steal people from Hotmail for advertising and sheer future-growth potential.

It's either grow or die, apparently.

and maybe this means there will be a competition war where all the big players start offering similiar deals. hopefully 4mb, 6mb, 10mb emails services are a thing of the past.

I'd be a bit nervous of it scanning my emails and posting advertisements on it..

It would either be fascinating (to see what keyworks its picking up).. or damnright weird..

I'd probably setup a dummy account on there.. just to send pics and other space-taking stuff.. keep the personal emails elsewhere..
